Why is the grille closed?

Why don’t they just leave it open so it can get more air inside the engine bay?

From G30 technical data. Same will apply to the G20.

Active air flap control
It was possible to carry over the active air-flap control from the G12. The cooling surfaces at the front of the vehicle can be closed by means of two separate air flaps. This reduces the drag coefficient and thus saves fuel. A further advantage is faster heating up of the engine after a cold start.

it opens when additional airflow is needed and stays closed for better aerodynamics the rest of the time

Is there a connector that you can unplug to leave the shutters open all the time? Like I did with the exhaust flaps.
