I recently purchased a ‘21 M340i and I absolutely love it. It’s my first BMW and I’m very impressed so far. With that being said, what are my options for tuning capabilities? I’ve read that ‘21+ is locked and a flash tune isn’t capable unless you ship the unit to Finland or Russia, and I’m also not completely sold on a piggyback. Does anyone know if there will be an easier flash tune method down the road? I’m not impatient, but I would like to have an idea if it’s even possible. If not and I have to go the piggyback route, what are the downsides to this method? I plan on keeping the car mostly stock. Maybe a DP down the road but that’s about it. Any insights on this will be greatly appreciated!

IMO the short answer is no. Unless one gets the encryption keys, it's not getting unlocked. Femto has them, and therefore is your only option. From what I can tell, it's safe and they are reliable. You just have to decide it's worth it and to live without your car for a couple weeks. If not, JB4 or leave it stock.

I rolled with jb4 for almost 2 years on my 2021. Its an okay solution so as long youre running a few gallons of ethanol with it, but take my advice, if youre one of those guys with the personality of always wanting more, DO NOT get a jb4 and just send it to femto. You’ll save some money and time.

+1 for FEMto.
I did it in January and it was superb.
As i´m from Germany it was inside of the EU and pretty fast.

Currently there´s no one close to a working unlock method.
Magic Motorsport said they´re working on it but that´s overdue for month.

I have the JB4 now and am about send out to Femto. Do not waste your time and money on a JB4 if you want the most performance out of your car. Learned my lesson to do it right the first time.

MichaelNRW Thank you for that. It just sucks because I’d rather go the full unlock and tune route, but sending my chip overseas just doesn’t sit right with me, not to mention the price. But I may just use it stock for awhile. As the other user stated, I’m definitely one of those people that always wants “more” so the JB4 may be ok for awhile but I’ll definitely want more if more is available.

There are companies that will send it out for you. Euro Performance Center in VA will actually hand fly your DME to Finland and then ship it back to you when they return.

Yes. They are leaving this month on the 14th, so there still is time if you wanted to get it done this month. They do a trip usually every month.
