You are better off buying a used 911 Turbo than a new M4 if you are looking for a true driver's sports car.

The M4 size is always GT level.

if you actually read the article it's more than that. they can't even partner up with transmission companies and even then it's not profitable at that level. if everyone wanted manual they should have spoken with their wallets. it's an understandable business decision.

The 911 Turbo has been a GT for a while now too. The 718 is a better sports car. Unless you get something like a GT3 or GT2.

Anyway, a used 911 Turbo is still WAY out of the price range of a new M4 unless we're talking "way past warranty" old.

You must be someone who loves crappy auto boxes.

We drive manual gearboxes for enjoyment. Some of us still use film cameras and listen to vinyl records. Why? Because they are enjoyable. I wear an analog watch...the list goes on and on.

I don't think so. MT versions of cars will always find buyers willing to pay a premium. I also think the M4 is one of THE most beautiful BMW's ever created. Like it's painfully pretty. So you'll be fine

My son is 9 months and I don't think he will ever learn to drive, at least not on the streets. Fully autonomous cars will be here at some point in the next 15 years.

Hmm... better off maybe, yes. But there are better P cars in the line up for sure for that type of driving! I love the Turbo though, but it's a GT car at heart (now).

If you don't need the back seats, a Cayman/Boxster (or used GT4/Spyder) might be a good fit over the M4 and is comparable in price.

I know we've been hearing drip drip of similar info in the past few months, but this is the most direct tone I have heard so far. And interestingly, he doesn't promise the same for the M3.

Reports are a G8x M car Touring may be slated for EU consumption. I cannot see why BMW would not bring that car here. (Well, I can, just wish they would)

Can't you still special order manual transmissions on M cars? It was an option on the F10 M5. Is it an option on the new M5?

Business wise it makes complete sense for automakers like BMW and Porsche to slowly get rid of manuals, not just because they sell less, but because once they are even more limited... they become more exclusive. Then, they can sell them in limited numbers for a premium, think of the 911 R before the 991.2 gt3 came out. The limited component of a manual makes motörhead's go nuts, and allows for them to capitalize on the desires of enthusiasts.

Cool. But BMW thinking they're even average at manuals is kind of funny. Porsche, Honda, Mazda and sadly, Ferrari, all do/did it wildly better.

If the manual dies, it should probably go out in a sports car, not a large, heavy sporty coupe.

Losing the manual transmission for good is definitely going to be a sad day in car production. But I'm going to miss the inline-six engine with a nice sounding m performance exhaust a lot more when we will all have to switch over to electric cars..

It does not matter, people will not buy the manual...

Food for thought, there are 82 M3s (F80s) for sale, only 2 of them are manual.

There are 179 M4s for sale ATM, 13 of them are manual.

Manual is dying? people are not buying, especially when the autos are delivering so much more...."performance" when compared.^

Personally, as much as i love manuals....i think they suit the last get M cars much better (the NA engines), something about shifting at 8K+ rpms yourself is much more satisfying, it suited the car. New gen....manuals feel and even sound a bit off.
