Did you drive them ? I've tried a C63 which is a real AMG, and then a C43... you could tell there were similarities... If you try an M3 then a 340... then it's not the same car at all ... Maybe i'm extrapolating while I've driven a G20 it wasn't a 340 (and obviously there is no G80 M3 out yet either but i bet i'd drive completely different from the base G20 again... i really hope at least) ... but i se nothing BMW has done to change what they have done before regarding M(arketing) performances products. I'm more in phase with what they've seen here Last edited by thaalrasha; 09-23-2019 at 07:04 AM.. |

Test drive a C300 and C43 and it feels like two different cars. The 43 gets more from the 63 in regards to how it drives and feels on the road. Mercedes makes some decent sports cars today - who would have thought we'd have been able to say that years ago! - the C43, E53 and CLS53, even the GLC43 are really good cars, and in reality, thats better for us, the enthusiast, more choices in the market!

I will take your word that the C43 is more like a real AMG. I never made it over to Mercedes maybe my personal bias from back in the day when they were known as the German car for people who enjoy drag racing lol.

I really wonder how the 330i luxury trim drives compared to the msport or m340i. I feel like that would be a better comparison with the C300 |

I would not trust this video to compare stock m340i vs c43 straight line performance since BMW made a mistake and let initial m340i hit the market " tuned " ( around 400whp) but they rectified it later with software update.
https://g20.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1638864 The two cars are good performer with advantage and disadvantage in various aspect and for me nothing major would make me rule out one or the other during an initial cross shopping list. It is more taste or specific priorities ( cargo space, sound, feeling when driving it, ...) that should dictate the final decision after driving and comparing both in real life .

unless I am missing something obvious, why do these guys (TH) compare the m340i to the 330i and not a 340i?

Looks are subjective, of course, but I don't think he is lonely. I also dislike the G20 and think is the worst looking 3 series by far. The majority of people I've asked don't like it either.

Too funny, looks are subjective indeed, there's always a subset of individuals who always proclaim the same thing whenever a new generation 3 Series debuts. F30 i find boring, G20 looks better to my eyes especially in M sport trim. Forget about looks, G20 is superior in driving dynamics to the F30; that's what counts.

You can watch this video which picks the M340i X-Drive over the AMG C43 4Matic (he should have compared the C43 sedan) or the Throttle House video where they both pick the AMG C43 over the M340i X-Drive and the Audi S4. Frankly, I trust the two drivers from Throttle House more. This guy is a newbie. I had a 2016 340i X-Drive (it was a great car), I have (wife's car actually) a 2019 X3 M40i, and now I drive a 2019 AMG C43. All these cars are great. BMW and Mercedes are really neck and neck in this 6 cylinder segment. Audi has fallen back from both BMW and Mercedes. Funny because 6 years ago that B8 Audi S4 was truly special with its V6 Supercharged engine , DSG, +sport diff.

The Throttle house review was subjective, the C43 was picked for the exhaust sound and how the tyranny shifted as well as the looks. Even they had mentioned chances are the BMW might have been the better track car. The guy on track TV liked the same things the Throttle house duo liked about the C43. However, at the end of the day, the M340i is the faster car, the C43 sounds better, nobody is disputing that.
I will take the faster car, as far as exhaust note, that can be rectified with aftermarket exhaust. Stock M340i are already running 12 seconds in the 1/4 miles on run flats. The car is faster than what BMW publishes. Also the M340i is superior to the F30 variant so it's pointless using it as a viable metric.

So what is going on at the Board room over at Audi?
Go back to the launch of the B8 S4...Audi knocked it out of the park. Put the reigning champ...the E90 335i...on its heels. Merc really had nothing in this segment...nothing below the C63...that could really challenge the B8 S4 or the E90 335i. But Audi really led the way in this 6 cylinder segment...both from a technical + performance perspective and branding ala cool "supercharged badges" on the front fenders. Now they are third in a 3 car race. its AMG C43 with its BITURBO badges against an "M" 340i....the marketing teams at both Mercedes and BMW taking pages from Audi's "S" marketing playbook. So how did it go so wrong over at Audi? Playing it too safe with the B9. That is why they did a mild "refresh" for 2019 and will do a major one for 2020. But they really need to start all over from whole cloth. The B9 looked like a slightly diluted and water downed B8...and the B9.5 is just "add ons" to try and jazz it up. But its all wrong. Hopefully...with the B10 S4 we will have 3 cars that really makes us think where to put our money. |
