I have the Type S Integra and an M3 Comp G80 so not a fair apples to apples comparison. But I have also driven some other manual cars, including Audis and BMWs in the past. First is you cannot compare the power on these two cars. The M3 is just a beast and will eat the ITS alive. But I feel two main things that the ITS is better: the shifter is the best in the industry, and the maneuvering in corners where the ITS feels more confident. Also, the steering in the ITS on Sport+ is a bit harder and more commanding on higher speed and turns. Other than that, the M3 is better.

I have a feeling these testers and journalists call themselves those guys who like to drive a slow car fast, but what it really is in reality is you’re still dog slow in that car. You’re not driving anything slow fast no matter what you may think. The other aspect these tests show is “out of the box” performance or bang for the buck. I dunno about you, but I don’t buy cars for their “stock capabilities”. I buy them for that but most importantly, the available overhead tuning potential they have. I never liked any BMW prior to the new ones with the S58 motors because I didn’t see the past interaction of engines to be any good. BMW fixed a lot of stuff with the S58, so what I’m buying is that and its tunability without the headaches of the older engines. Finally a perfect inline 6 from them. Lol

Journalists, like Car & Driver, are in business to make money. That means there's an agenda. These ratings are agenda driven, not purely objective. If we all truly understand that, we should also understand why there's no reason to get excited if the car we like ranks at the top of the list, nor is there a reason to get irritated if the car that we like ranks at the bottom.

What deserves examination is some people's desire to have other people like whatever they like. It's almost as if a person can't like/enjoy something unless other people agree. Comparison is the thief of joy. Do you think your car ranks #1 on the list? If so, good. Enjoy it.

This is an excellent point that goes beyond the surface level issue of “car and driver is wrong about this.”

It delves into the why behind the what; the notion of “I have identified myself with being a BMW M car driver and the M3 is the benchmark sports sedan.”

The moment there is counter evidence to this identity, it’s not just degrading the car, it’s offensive to how that person sees him/herself. Hence why so many ppl get very passionate in their replies and will look for every ounce of evidence why this is not true. This applies to religion, politics, etc

Therefore, the problem lies with how you have identified yourself, not with what C&D is doing or what the car is capable of. It’s a great car nonetheless and opinions doesn’t change the fact that it’s still a M3.

Yep, agree. People take things personally when their choices become part of how they identify themselves. So when someone doesn't like your choice, it reads as they don't like YOU. I'm a proponent of not playing that game. I like my car because I like it, not because other people tell me I should like it. And people who don't like it aren't saying anything about me as a person. So in short, the subjective rankings are useless.

What I do like are track and performance comparisons, because at least you can see what the cars are capable of (even though none of us will ever drive our cars like that).

Its based on way more than just performance. I love my M cars, but definitely aren't the best value per se. Performance per dollar cars like the Elantra N and Civic type R are hard to beat at half or less the price of one of ours.

It's number 3 on the list, but they aren't listed by rank within a certain score, just alphabetically.

This review combines a bunch more variables than just pure performance and certain aesthetics.

Well C&D has 3 2 door cars, on the list of best Premium Sport Sedans so not sure you can take anything they say soberly. No idea what their workflow is, who their fact checker is or even if they still have a copy desk looking up the meaning of words. Last I checked sedan means 4 doors with partition separating the trunk.
