Hello, I would like to know some tips to take care of the engine. I know some like before starting or parking, leaving the engine plugged in for 2-5 minutes or not stepping on it when cold. I would like to know some more tips. I have some doubts about care. I am a person who drives a lot. Is it bad to maintain a constant speed of 150 km/h or occasionally step on my car? It's a 320d G20 (automatic). thank you

diesel like to be driven long distance, they hate short trips.

don't drive it hard until things are warmed up

don't turn off the engine after driving it hard

change the engine oil every 10,000kms

G20 should have electric water pump that stays on for a little while after engine is off, so turning off the engine right after hard driving likely is ok nowadays.

There should coolant lines to and from the turbo.

i see. i thought turbos are cooled by oil primarily, i still run the car for at least 90s (Porsche standard) just in case. these are my first and last BMWs, not planning to change anytime soon.

Remember, if you let the engine warm up before driving, the rest of the drivetrain is not warmed up. You don't want to push the transmission or differentials until they are warmed up as well.

Perfect, and I make long trips but I have a constant speed of 140-160. Is that speed bad for cars?

I’m assuming the engine is run in now?
If not then running in should be varying loads and speeds and not lockdown. (See manual) but I don’t believe it’s an issue once the engine has been run in

Yeah there was a recall of the exhaust turbo oil feed line in my previous N26 and the SIB stated that coolant needs to be flushed/topped off, so the shop foreman explained to me that the new gen turbo is also cooled by coolant, and water pump stays on after engine is off to keep cooling the turbo.

The ZF 8AT should have coolant lines too, but u are correct the diffs and the rest of the drivetrain also need to be warmed up.

Garage List
I've treated my BMWs like this ...
  • Observe the break-in procedure for new cars. The owner's manual tells you what to do. Don't use cruise control, vary engine speed, etc.
  • Don't let the car idle after starting cold. The owner's manual usually states this. Start it and drive.
  • Wait until the drivetrain warms up (5-10 minutes) before pushing more than ~3.5K RPM.
  • Leave the car running after hard driving. It's PROBABLY OK to shut the car off based on comments in this thread, but when I did the BMW Performance and M driving schools, they always had us leave the cars running for 5-10 minutes after hard driving.
  • Redline the car now and then (maybe once a week if you're not the type that likes to do that - but you can certainly do it more often). Redlining helps exercise the engine, blow out carbon, etc.
  • This is obvious, but get the oil changed at the recommended intervals.
  • Change the engine air filter at the recommended interval.

thanks, that has remained a mystery to me, now at least i have some answers

also i'm glad to know that when my V8 is turned off, the "fan noise" is cooling the Hot Vee

(not sure how well it does it, the engine bay is still warm after 24 hrs)

1 point of clarity, BMW does not say you cannot let it idle to warm up. The caution they provide is just because you let the engine warm up, the drive train still needs to warm up. So typically warming up the engine does not offer much benefit since you must drive to warm up the drive train and that will warm up the engine.

I emphasized typically because there are times you may want or need to warm up the engine without driving. For example, if my car is parked outside in the winter and covered with snow/ice, I use remote start so when I get to the car I can easily clean the windows.

for the OP

you don't need to do that for your diesel, it likes to cruise at 100-160

that is "redline" enough for the diesel

poster is talking about Italian tune up, heating everything up to vapourise dirt, water, etc that is stuck inside the engine (unfortunately it also causes carbon - not sure how much carbon it makes vs how much carbon it clears)

for me haha my jap cars that see redline always die prematurely. doesn't apply to jap cars.

my BMWs yeah they see redline more than they see 3000rpm.

I’ll add another
Avoid short journeys where the car doesn’t warm up
