Acura TLX Type S to BMW M340i
Hi all,
Has anyone driven (or owned) an Acura TLX Type S and then moved into a BMW M340i? I currently have a Type S, and I am thinking about making the jump over to BMW. I have driven the M340i, and it truly is a "drivers" car. If anyone has gone from Acura to BMW, what are your thoughts as far as driveability, reliabililty, and just overall ownership between the two vehicles? |

I have driven both.
The biggest difference is in driver involvement and comfort. The Acura TLX Type-S is a more involving and comfortable car. It will speak to you more in the corners, and it is also more plush. HOWEVER, the BMW will be a more composed car and is definitely faster… and the BMW gets better gas mileage too. It’s a question of if you want speed and the refinement of the B58 + ZF 8-speed. If yes, the BMW is a much better car. If you want more creature comforts, the Acura wins. Take your pick. The BMW will put a bigger smile on my face. That’s the ultimate test. So far, reliability has been great. I actually found that in my previous Honda products, there have been rattles and minor annoyances. Both BMWs that I've owned (M340i, M440i GC) have had zero rattles. My '21 M340i had a couple of issues where you had to top up the oil every 3-4k miles, and there was a coolant leak which caused the Mild-Hybrid system to malfunction. The Mild-Hybrid issue was covered under warranty. I've had my M440i GC for 12k miles, and so far, zero issues. It has the same engine as that '21 M340i, and yet there have been zero issues with the Mild-Hybrid system and I have not had to top up oil even once. It's been flawless. Whatever issue BMW had with the '21 B58 MH system has been fixed in later iterations. I say go for it. Last edited by madpistol; 03-14-2024 at 01:49 PM.. |

Yeah, I keep going back and forth. I am going to lease a M340i if I go that route, so I won't have to worry about any out of warranty issues.
What issues have you encountered so far with your BMW? |

Zero issues with my current '22 M440i GC. It's an amazing platform.

I have a 2024 M440i G26 XDrive and came from a 2019 LCI W205 AMG C43 and this M440i puts such a smile on my face :-) You will have no regrets. These M340/M440s are just fantastic!

Implied reliability with Acura (and Honda, in general) doesn’t track like it did 10-20 years ago. Likewise, implied unreliability with BMW doesn’t track like it did 10-20 years ago.
If I wanted utmost reliability, I’d choose a Lexus, not a Acura.

I fully agree. For quite a while, Acura & Honda have been rated in the middle of the pack in Consumer Reports in reliability. They seem to be making a resurgence. I've had 3 Lexus (92 ES, 98 GS, 06 SC) and all have been stellar reliability wise. They were just not fun to drive. I don't put a lot of miles on my cars. I dumped my 16 Audi A6 3.0 (30k miles) for my 23 M340i because in those 6 years I owned it, I was on my 3rd water pump and had to replace the electronic emergency brake (which I never used). I'm done with Audi.
