Basic M50 or 40 with some bits?

Im due to come out of my 330e and I'm going to opt for an i4. My 330e is fully specced and I love the tech. My company budget doesnt allow a fully specced i4 so im already going to miss some bits on a 40. But the budget will allow a basic M50!

What would you go for?

I'd ask myself, do I like the tech or do I like to whip around corners? If you're good with a 330e and love the tech, my personal opinion is to option up a i4 40. It's still going to be super fast and fun to drive.

I’d go for the 40. If you spec up close to the M50 OTR price, that’s quite a few options! 5.6 sec 0-60 doesn’t give the full picture, that instant torque makes it feel much quicker in normal driving conditions.

M50 all day, every day.

I have and M50 with the 20" wheels and every option except external carbon and ventilated seats.

The acceleration is addictive and pulling 1G on an on ramp is just killer.

I have an 2022 e40 with 90% of the options. 15K miles 15 months. I don't recall the last time I wished I had an M50. I do wish my car had adjustable side bolsters.

Have the M50 myself right now, but would still reitterate what you say here.

The M50 is quick 0-60, but it's really starting to drop off at the top end of that and it's really noticeable. It's almost a bit frustrating to have that instant torque with the lower power-to-weight ratio, so I never really accelate more than 20-30 mph at a time. It's was always quite the opposite in a real M car. All-in-all, I won't take it to the track like I did my other cars, but it feels quicker day to day, and the 40 isn't as far off in those 20 mph increments due to that instant torque.

Why don't you consider the xdrive version of i4?

Don't think it's an option in the UK.

I'd be unhappy with the slower version.

Power delivery is almost linear all the way up to max speed (130mph in the US). The top-end power on the M50 is what sets it apart.

I love the overtaking power of the M50 which the eDrive40 doesn't come close to. I'd still go with the M50 if I were to choose again.

Drove a m50 at PCD around the auto-x track and it can handle!!! It boogies and turns. Would definitely order a m50.

On an empty freeway a friend of mine were playing around and his M5 Competition could not pull away until I hit 130. He couldn't catch me if I pulled away first until I hit top speed.

The M50 is a true beast up to 130.
As far as turning, my car is lowered with suspension setup tweaks. I can effortlessly pull .96G on an on ramp without the tires squealing. It just does it.
I also have no issues with quick maneuvers.

A lowered M50 hides it's weight very well.

I can't imagine buying another EV unless it was maybe an i5 M60, but then it's even heavier and not as sporty.

I drive an M50 and the speed and instant torque is addictive. Even in ECO Pro mode, the car is still very powerful and energy efficient. In high 30 degrees temperature, I'm still averaging up to 3.2 mi/kw and that is after occasionally ripping the speed at 'high levels' fairly often - it's almost impossible not to because the car wants you to

Anyone who is unsure but leaning towards saving money, just make sure that you DO NOT test drive the M50 extensively. If you do and you can afford it, you won't even consider a 40.
