Any insight would be helpful! Have a service appointment in 2 weeks, that was the first appointment they had with a loaner vehicle available.

I had the same 'knock' on my 2019 M340i x drive. BMW UK authorised my local dealer to change the steering rack which was completed last week 23rd/24th June 2021. So far the knock has gone!

Didn't do it on a regular basis; eventually after a spirited drive - the car was 'hot' - on returning home after 2 hours of continuous driving it knocked consistently every couple of hundred yards. My dash cameras picked up the sound and this allowed my local BMW service department to hear the noise. Dealer couldn't replicate but asked me for the dashcam MP4 files which were sent to BMW UK. Within 24 hours BMW UK responded with "change the steering rack". This was completed last week (24th June 2021) and so far after 200/250 miles the knock has gone!

Reference the video clip from dwj6211 posted 13th June2021
Do you have a job number or any paper work I have same problem bmw keep saying nothing is wrong and I want this sorted.

Have you got to the bottom of this?

Don’t suppose you find it’s only audible when the weather is warmer?

Weird you say that. Mine has been in warmer weather but only after a longer drive. After a longer drive, the knocking noise becomes way more obvious.

Well. It's been about 90F during the day here for a few weeks. Had my L control arm replaced due to some damage. It used to clunk only at slow speeds under 15mph but now it clunks on the highway...why?!?!?!?!

Third time going back to BMW. There'd gotta be an engineer on this forum that can get to the bottom of this??

Add me to the list. 2020 m340i, RWD, adaptive suspension. So far had the front left lower control arm replaced as part of SIB 31-01-20 (thanks to this thread). Noise doesn’t seem to be as prevalent but still there, especially driving over bumps now. Part that was replaced: 31-10-6-888-855

If the G20 steering rack has an adjustment nut then turn it clockwise an 1/8 of a turn at a time until clunk is gone.

Took a few more drives since control arm replacement. Clunk is less prevalent for sure, but still there. Also temperature has been lower so that might be a factor, too, since I first started to hear/feel it when the heat got bad.

Exactly the same here. Parts changed - ok until the temperature went up. Then back exactly as before.

Surely BMW are aware of this problem. My dealership alone has had 3 cars in all with the same issue.

Hi guys, I have a BMW 320i M Sport G20 and has recently started to hear some clunking noise in the front suspension when going over bumps or some road imperfections. I have searched online and found this thread (many thanks!). Now I'm thinking about going to service and showing the car. It seems to be a warranty case and is related to either DSC software update or wishbone / tension strut replacement. Which category should I select when booking the service, 'fault diagnosis' I suppose? Most of the dealers want £200 for this but how does this correlate with the fact that it's supposed to be covered by the warranty? Any comments are welcome.

Surely thats for out of warranty work? I've never paid for fault diagnosis for a BMW under warranty.

Car is in with my dealer with all the ideas from this forum and other posts about this issue. Not sure what to expect but will report back here if they can replicate and what they try to fix.

Unfortunately, they've been unable to replicate the issue Going to try again tomorrow and if still nothing, will give the car back to me.

Could not replicate. Checked tie rods, struts, control arms, bushings… say all looks fine. So the only thing I had changed was the left control arm per the TSB for this noise, which did not fix the noise (couple of months ago). Personally I think they should swap both the upper and lower control arms on all wheels, but I guess they can only do what comes back for my VIN (I.e. they won't be compensated by BMW for anything more).

This really sucks, had alot of people blame the tire rods. I feel your pain my car only does the rattle after doing like 200 miles which I'd struggle to reproduce. Maybe see how much it ould cost to replace them and weight it up.

Link to my issue below, is it similar ?

I think similar noise. Is it the deeper clunk/thump noise you're hearing? I will say that after the dealer did the TSB fix by VIN, the noise became less frequent, though I don't think mine was ever quite as frequent as what I think I hear in this video. Have you had your dealer check your VIN against that TSB?

Mine sounds like this but very constant on every drive. I am also lowered on H&R so hesitant about taking to the dealership.

I dropped my 2022 M340i (rwd, non-adaptive) to the dealer on Saturday for something that sounds like what others have reported in this thread.

It started about a week ago and got much worse, very fast. It got to the point where the car didn't feel safe to drive based on the sound and feel of the CLUNK. Low speed bumps, especially up and down driveways, primarily from the front left wheel. Feels like the whole front subframe is about to fall out. Thankfully the shop foreman was around and took the car out for a test drive with me along for the ride. As we left the dealer down the driveway, there was an immediate KERCLUNK and he said "oh yeah that's not good". I was glad to have him confirm what I was hearing!

They should be looking at the car today. Will update this thread as I hear more.

Please do. That’s unsettling to hear. Good luck.
