Note that the round displays won't get iDrive7 (or OS7 or what's it called), and so you want be able to choose most driving assist functionality or a HUD.

But the reviews have all said that Audi's multifunctional instrument binnacle display is what people want, not basic round dials.... if BMW just built the mythical brown manual diesel station wagon beloved of enthusiasts, there would be no BMW ten years, and it sounds like half of this forum wouldn't be that sad about it tbh.

I think it'll be interesting to see how/if BMW fits this display in M models. Hopefully they'll develop a display that can be toggled to different formats (including one that mirrors traditional dials) like Audi and Merc do.

Here's a video of the live cockpit in a new X5. Very disappointing imo.

I've used the MMI Digital Cockpit in my A3 for over a year now. It's pretty awesome, especially having the full nav display in front of you. But then again, my A3 doesn't have a HUD. My opinion - if there is a wonderful HUD (like in most BMWs), why bother with the digital dash? I still miss the HUD from my last F30.

I kind of see the idea behind it, it'll probably seem redundant to have a full map on the instrument cluster, then one on the main screen, plus HUD giving you arrows. That'll probably be overkill but the vertical speedometer is what baffles me

Yeah, it will take some getting use to. But why not have a 'classic' setting with the traditional layout? It's going to be just a computer screen so I wouldn't think it would be that big of a deal to add one more mode, even if some of the new functions may then be unavailable.

It's graphical user interface (GUI) coding. It doesn't take years to code a GUI, but I agree with your conclusion . . . don't expect it. It's obvious that BMW has developed this as a new signature styling element, similar to their traditional dual gauge look. I'm sure it'll be updated along the way, but it looks to me as though BMW has stuck its neck out with this design.
