Anyone get this option just to have the surround view camera? How reliant are you on the camera and does it show real time footage of the side so that you don't curb your wheels? Anyone find it gimmicky? Thanks.

I use it all the time, it does help with avoiding the curbs. Having said that, it's not an absolute must have.

Do the extra cameras help at all to avoid scraping the front on a parking block or the side wheels on the curb? In other words, how useful is it?

No. The front curb disappears from view about 18” from approach and there are no front sensors that warn of approaching them. Kind of defeats the purpose. You still have to get out and check or park in reverse.

It helps me in my Audis. I wish I had it in my 330i but I bought it off the lot and they didn’t have a car at a decent price (<$55k) with the parking assistance package.
But yes. It does help.

it's definitely good to have
Not gimmicky - true view.
Yes it probably makes us dumber drivers in the long term when you gradually lose that spatial perspective but my heart really rips with the crunching sound...

I added it at the last minute with my build and I love it. When I first ordered my car I thought it was a gimmick and a waste of money. Like anything else, until you have it it isn’t a must have. Now that I have it I will always have a car with it. It helps me park close to curbs on the side and the front without guessing.

Interesting viewpoints. A lot of comments suggest getting it just for the surround view cameras, not for the actual parking feature. There are a few people that claim to never use any of the features at all and that it’s just more technology to worry about glitching or repairing.

I’d never get the package solely for the self parking features. The only reason I’d get it is for the extra set of eyes to avoid pulling to far into parking spaces and avoiding rim rash from misjudging turns into and out of driveways and parking lots. I actually think the self parking features are quite douchey and embarrassing that I’d personally never want to be seen using them.

What made you change your mind at the last minute to add it?

I have it and mainly just use it for the cameras as well. The cameras are a must have at this point. Pulling into tight garage spaces, not curbing your wheels, parking into tighter spaces.

The one parking feature I use on a daily basis is the reversing assistant when I'm getting out of my garage. It's incredible, no longer have to worry about if I'm going to accidentally rip one of my side mirrors off backing out.

As for the self parking features.... I use them to show off to friends/family and that's about it. In real world driving, they're just too impractical to use. Parallel parking requires you to drive slowly while searching for a parking spot and of course that'll annoy drivers behind you. And for perpendicular parking, it only backs in, and it does so slowly. Admittedly I have used this feature on a few occasions but I can just do it quicker on my own with the aid of the cameras.

How to know if you have this feature? Is it the round LED lit button next to the Hazard button?

The round LED lit button is for the driving aids (i.e. collision avoidance, lane keep, etc)

The park assist button is the button on your center console with the P, right above the auto stop/start button.

I ordered my car early right around when the cars hit the showroom and I really didn’t know much about some of the features. I added the parking assistance plus and the wireless charger at the last minute just because it really didn’t add much to my overall payment so I said why not. I am glad I did it now though. I have never used the self parking feature but always use the cameras since I am an end spot parker so I am always next to a curb.

NO! Only turn that off if you have never made a mistake on the road, AND if you have never seen another driver make one.

I turned off the lane change thing where it takes over my steering wheel, if I don't use a blinker.

I don't want to be forced to use a blinker when I don't have to. In California it's NOT required in the fast lane.

I do agree the 360 view camera is a must have !

However I miss the different camera views that I had in my previous 2019 Mercedes A-Class, especially the one focused on the 4 wheels (super helpful while parking).

About that pic, is it from your X5? I like that gloss wood trim surround look a lot.

I have it and couldn't do without it. Excellent for checking your in a space, auto comes on when you are too close to something.

Most used feature for me is the panoramic front camera view. Gives a wide view when pulling out of a blind spot and gives a red visual alert and audible alert.

Also you can set activation points so the panoramic camera comes on at set gps locations.

Clever technology.

That specific pic is actually from an X7 I found online (I was looking for the clearest possible pic of the park assist button).

But I have the identical trim on my X5... this is mine:

Thanks!

Yeah ametrin metallic is the individual color. It's kind of red/purple depending on the light. The trim is also an individual color: "fine wood ash grain", as is the ivory merino leather.

I bought it for the additional cameras, the top-down view. I use it to back in and park about an inch from the curb on my passenger side so I can avoid dreaded door dings from other drivers.

I have experimented with the self-parking features and have used it for parallel parking in tight spaces a few times.
