GT-R 3.3 sec 0-60 mph tested by Edmund in japan on new owner's car

3.3 sec

car was graciously lended for the test by a lucky new owner.

faster than the corvette Z06 and porsche 911 turbo.
11.6 sec quarter mile tied with 911 turbo. Z06 and Viper in the dust.
excellent handling at the cones.
7'38 sec Nring time.
No further denying of this car's achievements possible.

M serie nowhere to be seen. BMW left wondering how to get at that level of performance at that price instead has decided to make a sedan M3 version.

wanted to buy an M3 will wait for a Nissan GTR instead.

Can't refute the performance of the GTR. Amazing acceleration for a 3800 + lb car. The trap speed of 121 is perhaps in line with almost 500 hp and that weight, but I'd guess it is (as SWAMP has contended) at least 20-40 HP underrated (especially considering AWD driveline losses).

Factor in the tunability of the twin turbo 3.8L V6 (once they get a piggyback on that thing) and the car will simply be insanely fast (probably 600 HP with just a tune).

However, the overall feel of the car (vs. the M3) will be a big determining factor, since the M3 with DCT will provide more than enough performance and thrills for 99% of potential buyers.

So I think the $70K questions will be do you want a fast, great handling and feeling car (Porsche Cayman S), a faster and almost as great handling and feeling car (M3) or an even faster and great handling (feel TBD) Nissan? Oh, throw in the Z06 for good measure. Good times!

1. Repost, old information. We have been discussing this for some time.
2. The car is technically brilliant and very fast. I still say that to get these numbers some over-rating is quite possible. Furthermore, I think if anyone thinks they will get 1 of 1500 cars worldwide with this performance level at MSRP (meaning at $69k base) you are nuts.

Man, this makes it that much harder not to buy it.....
I must be Nuts.... I CAN get one at $69K here in Yokohama and have it delivered in March.
The crazies that are paying $90K here in Japan want be be the very first and were willing to pay $$$ for a one day old used car.
The dealers all must sell at MSRP. No discounts, No markups.

I thought with the second shift they were going to make 1000 / month. The 15000 / year is for the US domestic market only.

if i am not mistaken, these will be limited production...which ofcourse leads to insane first price sales. my guess somewhere around 100K. i remember when the z06 came out, regular prodouction vehicle that was sold in the 90's, well above sticker

$100k is such a far-fetched number. a $30k premium for limited production? yeah right.

Talk to a friend that is an owner of a Nissan dealership here in seattle about the GTR...here is a rough overview...

- Cars should show up in about 5 months

- his allotment was 3 vehicles (I guess 1500 coming to US this year)

- By selling the GTR the dealership has to be upgraded, didn't catch all of that but something about suspension tuning equipment, to tell the truth he wasn't much of a tech guy so pointless to say too much...but bottomline cost were about $70k to the dealership to upgrade.

In summary, selling these things at 90-100k for the first year would only break even the cost (about $8k profit at MSRP plus about 20 something thousand over to account for dealership investment....)....of course this can be amortized over a few years but the point being you will be paying $90k+ for one of these in 2008.

That being said the thing is wicked and will compete with anything...I worry a little bit about durability...with so much electronic control over everything and such small production numbers seems like you could be getting your balls in a vice down the road....

GTR article in Winding Road

Good in-depth article in this month's (2/08) Winding Road, including behind the scenes at the factory and a video. There may be more like 6,000/year coming to the US.
