We vote with our wallets, and not enough people bought manuals for it to be worth the cost of them developing them. If there was a 20-30% uptake in Manual purchases they would still make them.

Absolutely. I think there was a report on the take rate for DCT vs Manual. 80% + DCT and like less than 20% manual. I don't think we'll see another manual M3/M4 after the G8x. The M2 has a chance.

the steering is a major improvement on the g20 and the handling feels so much better as well. my only complaint is the pedal feel in sport mode. it seems as if it doesn't change at all and you really have to get on it before you feel the extra torque. actually thinking about it, i don't remember the steering being any different in sport either. about to take our msport out again to see.

Which is it? It's okay for BMW to kill 6MT because they were last. Or it's okay not to bring wagons because only MB and Volvo sell wagons? Massaging to make your point. |

You're entitled to your opinion. The B9 S5 was head and shoulders ahead of the F3x gen. The point I was making was that manuals and wagons are a dying(dead?) breed. People have gravitated towards SUV's. 44% of total BMW sales last year were SUV's in the USA. Let that sink it.

As for advanced lighting, in terms of corner lighting and adaptability, Audi (and even my GTI with LED's) has BMW beat, add in the EU features through coding and they're superb. As for manuals, it's not exactly news that they're largely going away. Outside of the 718, 911, MX5 and Wrangler, I bet in five years there won't really be any significant options. Doesn't mean BMW isn't losing sales because of dropping them now though. To be fair, probably not enough to offset the cost of certifying it, but an auto only Z4 is just dumb (not that a folding hardtop one wasn't equally dumb.) |

The cost of developing a manual just isn't worth it anymore. We're in agreement that it sucks and it's stupid that no manual option is offered for the 'Ultimate Driving Machine'. Also understand that it's stupid for BMW to offer a manual transmission for something like five percent of the population.

There's nothing to wake up to. Going down the same road. You are around five percent of the population. BMW does not cater to five percent of the population. If they did, they would be out of business right now and BMW would cease to exist. They cater to the majority of the population because they need to make money. This isn't really hard to understand. 2+2=4. If the M3 take rate goes down with the G8x, you can bet it's not coming back. The only reason the manual transmission is still alive in M cars was only because the take rate was high, especially in the M2.

No surprise here, exactly the review I expected. Abundance of tech with not much else, bland vanilla for the masses.

In a somewhat strange programming mode, they do when set to Auto, but do not when turned to On. Not sure what the logic there is. |

I wish they kept the oil temp gauge instead of switching to coolant temp...

The new A8, A7, and A6 also don't come with adaptive LED headlights that steer into turns. They come with Matrix LED headlights as an option, but they don't do anything here in the states other than go high beam and low beam automatically when they sense light. The current generation Q5 doesn't have it either. They will automatically level, but they will not go right or left. You'll see an LED cornering light turn on, though.

I'd have sworn that our Q5 did too, but I rarely drive that thing, especially at night. But this sort of silly logic does reek of VAG. I do know that it's an additional cost option on Porsches, LED's are one price, and steering LED's are an additional cost. |
