If the grill will serve less of a function (i.e. closed for much of the time), why did it get bigger?

The new 5 is such a well proportioned car. Looks beautiful and sleek from all angles and reminds me of the old 5 and 7 series from the late 90s.

I do think they are going much more aggressive with the g20 but I am 40 plus and have outgrown that size sp I am not the target customer (I have 2 kids and hk monthly parking costs more than a g20 lease price in the USA).

Trying to keep up with the Jones (aka. Lexus). But to be fair, larger grills seems to be an industry trend.

Front looks like a BMW. The rear looks like a Lexaudi.

I'm good with all of it except the grill. Damn that's ugly. What's up with the top part over the hood? It's closed and non-functional...:

Poeple think it looks like a Lexus because the general first impression gives you that perception. Exactly like the first post states. Yeah, you and me as a BMW fans might try to “not see it” that way, yet, it does look like it. The taillight is that way or this way, or upside down, or whatever, but still lacks originality regardless of your inside cringe to accept that.
BMW used to have, double unmistakable angel lights; now they blend in with whatever cheap brand that have no personality or struggle to find one. When someone tries to copy you, than is good, and you have a solid piece, a statement. But BMW decided to trash the heritage and follow the rest of the herd...
The BMW tail lights were always distinctive, two lines, three lines, four lines, more lines (Bangle era), but they were defined by originality, flowing design. Not anymore.
Regardless how I scratch my mind, still can not understand the suicidal path that BMW folowed lately in design.

In the end, I was waiting for this new 3 Series for many years as I couldnt stand the headlamps-grill conection and the hood line.
What a disapointment for me as a fan to see this blend-in underwhelming result!
And how disappointed I am in me for not buying that S5 earlier, at least is original. Never thought I will say this...

Now, the 2 Series and 5 are the ones still apealing to me. But one is smaller, the other is bigger.

The new grill, obnoxious design is too much and too blinky for my taste. It was a time when a BMW was a simple original and SIMPLY beautiful sporty machine...

Not to mention, after my engine failure at exactly 80.015 km -not in warranty-, and forced to buy a new engine too, not sure about your “masterpiece” definition....
Sad but true.

Especially as the quality probably finally got better with the G20.

G20 is better, even though the taillights look Lexus or whatever.

For a long time everyone copied BMW, I think after Merc copied their X6 they no longer care they will copy too just like the new X4 which looks like the GLC coupe. If it means we get a better looking car I say rock on!

This car actually looks pretty nice! The taillights look good but they are way too “Lexus-eey” for my taste. The biggest problem for me is the transmission. My previous car was a stick and grew to love it despite a few harrowing episodes in the first few months of ownership. Vowed to drive only sticks and “hated” the thought of owning an automated manual. Until I bought one. Absolutely love my 7-speed DCT. This is a sports sedan and the fact that the manual transmission was truly BMW’s Unique Selling Proposition and no longer makes me look at other brands. My next car will likely be a 6-speed F80/F82. Or if I went with automatics a C63 S. For those who could care less about a stick shift, let me just say that we’ll all be having this conversation about Level 5 autonomous driving in the very near future where you won’t be able to buy a car you can actually drive yourself. And you won’t have a choice.

I feel like he (or she) is trolling. I sincerely doubt 9 people would be so disgusted by the 3er that they wouldn't buy. I just leased a F30, but I will more than likely go to G20 when the lease runs out, while there are things I don't like about the new design, saying it's ugly is disingenuous.

So this has probably already been said before, but I guess I didn't catch before that the kidneys aren't functional for air flow. I have to say I'm not a fan. Seem too high and too big. Seems that all grills are becoming big and hideous. Can't stand the Infinity and Audi grills of late. These at least aren't AS bad.

Hideous. Looks like BMW just gave the f30 a fat lip (try to un-see that!) destroyed the traditional 3-Series character line, and completely botched the HVAC controls.

Other than the nicely integrated the nav screen, it truly looks worse each time.

They look absolutely stunning in person.

Especially with the M Performance Black-Line Kidney Grills.

The only things that are certain in life are death, taxes, and that everyone will absolutely hate the new 3-series when it's initially introduced, and perhaps even throughout much of the time it's in production. It has a fat ass, it looks like a Lexus, it's a boat, the kidney grill is too shiny, they fucked up the Hofmeister kink, I'm going to get a Mercedes, blah, blah, blah. Yet despite this, everyone will still go out and buy, err, excuse me, lease their 330i and learn to love hating it until the subsequent generation arrives. At that point, the current generation becomes less maligned and one day will become an example of the ideals that BMW once stood for prior to "losing their way".

The real victims in all of this will be those who actually do buy a Mercedes .

+1 And in the end, if it really drives like a 3 series should and the quality is better than with the F30, I honestly don't care that much about big kidneys and strange tail lights...

Not sure if anyone noticed, but those look like active grills like the X3. I wonder how much work it will be to swap them out for all black.

I really like it. Not crazy about the giant grills. Im sure they will look better in black/dark grey. I am really glad they lost the broken hood line that killed the look for me on the F30/F10.

Just a thought and pardon me for sounding fanboish, but if almost every manufacturer copied design elements from a previous design, and now the new design still reminds you of that, is it BMWs fault or all those who previously copied design elements?

Lastly cars are designed by wind tunnels and aero simulation first, which is why nearly every car has the same basic shape/profile.
