Many were able to get significant discounts on the second model year as well. In LA it was not uncommon for dealers to be charging over MSRP first year. Second year 10%+ off could be negotiated with incentives.

If I were to speculate, if the grill really receives the anticipated reactions one of two things will happen. Either the front end trim is changed to make the grill look better (The M2 had different seats, mirrors, etc so I don't think this is too crazy that they add pieces or redesign the grill surrounds to make the size blend in better) , or the other possibility is the car is going to be offered at significantly larger discounts than they were for the 2016 F80s. It is possible that both of these could happen.

Car sales have been trending downwards, we have had the largest YOY decreases in the last few decades, even larger than the great recesssion. This has already happened, couple that with even a slight downturn in the economy , increased competition from competitors and you've got yourself a situation like Aston Martin currently has (an absurd amount of dealer inventory, and unheard of discounts).
A more than slight downturn in the global economy is already in the books today due to the virus. Every day it keep getting worse is additional damage. This one is going to hurt since it hits hard on supply (Chinese factories idling) and demand (Chinese customers hibernating).

Just do what I'm doing- ordering an M4 Comp with Executive- CF parts.

Keep it 3-4 years then get the refreshed G80.

I cannot afford the double depreciation, and besides that, I need the 4 doors.

I was about to upgrade my 14 F30 to a 17 CPO F80 2 years ago but then decided not to get a same body style car. Then I started looking at an RS5 Sportback last year but when I knew the G80 will come in AWD and is expected to be more powerful, more aggressive & offer a better driving experience than the Audi I thought I'd wait an extra year or two. And here I am now still over a year away from even test driving a G80

Do you feel that it's less likely for the first year production cars to have issues since the engine & transmission are already in the X3M/X4M, and other technology is already in place in the 3 series, and so on?
I've had one of, if not the first, sold by my dealership for my '01, '08 & '15 M3/M4 coupes. There have been issues on occasion (E46 rod bearings, E92 TBAs) but not extraordinary and all well-handled by the dealer. As cars get more complex electronics though, the software seems to be the weak area for issues. Seeing some of that on my'20 GLE. I will probably bite early on this one, though.

I have owned multiple first year M cars with zero issues. The "working out the kinks" thing isn't grounded in reality based on my experience.

After getting both a first year e90 M and a first year F80 then owning later years of both generations I would personally wait. I had a bunch of ticky tacky problems with both my first years plus tons of upgrades in 09/16 respectively.

I always wait a year... BECAUSE..... the lease price a year out is about two thirds what it is if you need to be the first to drive it.

If you are patient and smart you can drive the best BMW's at a mere fraction of the cost. You just can't be the first guy on the block with the latest and greatest.

I've had a LOT of BMW's... twenty something. Did not pay too much for any of them.

I've owned two BMWs as first year model runs. Both have had issues that were common in first year runs. However, warranty was able to take care of them. It is annoying to have to leave the car at the dealership.

Keep in mind, a lot of lessons learned will be sorted out in the second model year. In fact, most second year actually comes with extra equipment. Case in point, the G05 X5s.

Currently, I'm interested in vehicles that have gone through a LCI.

FWIW I had a 2016 M3. The 2017 M3 competition package was such an improvement in smoothness and refinement I made the switch.

I imagine that they were in pristine condition. Great grab for a collector but too bad PW checked out too soon.

Yes I got it. For a lot of people aesthetics will be eclipsed by performance. I believe it will surprise quite a few people
