DME UNLOCK!

Hello, I have a 2020 M340I with a pre June DME. Bought the car in March 2020, so it's impossible to have a DME from June. First day I got the car I disabled all options for IDrive updates/software upgrades because I heard of what BMW was doing locking them. Reached out to MHD and a few other tuning companies and turns out I was on 60_120(Locked) instead of 60_110 (Unlocked). Turns out I was literally 0.1 Update off of a unlocked DME. I believe software was
07/2020.(Don't remember exact number) My question is who can unlock my DME without ridiculous prices. I know it needs a bench unlock but I'm getting insane quotes ranging from $600 to $1000 for just a unlock from local shops. (I'm in Los Angeles) I know Twisted Tuning and Kies motorsports do it under 250 but don't wanna risk sending out a DME and being out of a car for who knows how long and the risks of shipping as well. Does anyone have a shop to do a Bench Unlock for a reasonable price and no I don't need that shops tune. Really frustrating someone needs to figure out a way to unlock through OBD like before. These companies know BMW isn't gonna give up these tactics and magically start giving them unlocked so someone needs to figure this out. If anyone knows a shop to do it please let me know, and I know a lot of G20 and pretty much any new generation BMW owner will appreciate it. Thanks!

Mission Performance in Rancho Cucamonga (not too far from you) will bench unlock your DME for $200 - $250 (don't remember exact number) with no need to move forward with their flash.

I did read that you only want a local unlock and not a local tune...however food for thought:

You just happen to have a world class tuner that is "local" to you and if you flash while there the DME unlock fee is waived.

Anyhoo hope this helps....

Another vote for Mission Performance. I just got their stage 3 e50 tune and so far it is amazing! Also only tuner that can maintain function of your factory remote start. I had a local tuner unlock my dme and give me a tune but I had issues with partial throttle. I reached out to Alex and now the car so far has been perfect. I still need to do some dragy runs to see if it is just as fast but it sure feels like it is. You are lucky to be so close to Mission. I'm on the other coast. Lol. Good luck!

Heard of Mission Performance before, one of the first in the game to do many things with the G20 M340i's. Thanks for the advice, I'll email them and see what they say, hopefully it's $250. I am currently running JB4 and would love a backend flash by them for burbles.

Sure hope it helped a bit Based on the additional info you've shared I'll offer up the following (just my 2-cents)
  • I would call Alex at the shop during normal PST business hours - email typically isn't the best way to reach him
  • As far as I know Mission Performance does not offer a backend flash option to work with any piggyback
  • Only exception to the aforementioned I have seen is if someone is running a JB4 strictly as a meth controller (however from what I've come to learn MP, with its' current offerings, will not support street cars running meth so probably not an option if someone was interested)
  • You've mentioned MHD and as I'm sure you are well aware that's where you will typically want to turn if you want to keep the JB4
  • Unless you have intention of ditching the piggyback in favor of a flash - sounds like MP will be a good source but only for the local unlock you are after which is cool you have a local resource for that
  • I'm in Huntington Beach (by the Pier) if you have any interest in driving my Stage 2 MP flashed car prior to heading to MP for an unlock (If that's what you decide to do) come swing by and I'll give you the keys to my car

Looking forward to hearing about your progress and what path you end up going down

ps- Sorry if I threw up too much info...in summary yes there is a local unlock resource available to you at a reasonable price

I live in Norcal, and we only have Carbanh which hasn't been the best help so far in terms of unlocks. I would make the drive to Mission and see Alex once they have an unlock ready. The Jb4 in the meantime is fun but I know this motor can do so much more with a flash tune.

Yeah it's pretty cool (understatement of the century) to have a Global tuner in our backyard that makes himself available to his customers still (meaning he doesn't just point you to his app but is still willing to meet in person if you make the drive).

Got a appointment to take it in Wednesday for a DME unlock! Will most likely go with the MHD backend flash for burbles/speed limiter removal. If I buy out the car I will 100% get a tune by them! Will keep you updated!

I tried Bootmod3 tune on my 2019 330i G20 (B46), and the BMW app says my DME is LOCKED and requires BENCH UNLOCK. My production date is 4/18/2019, and my DME date is 4/1/2019. I don't get it.

Because your software was updated, so BMW locked your 2019 ecu. However, you can go do a bench unlock and you are free to do whatever you want. But if BMW updates the software again, you will relock your ecu.

Thanks, but I understand anything post (mid?) 2020 is unlockable. Does that just mean DME hardware post-2020 is unlockable?

Anything that is 06/2020+ is not unlockable currently. Anything before 06/2020 is unlockable. However, if BMW updated your software, it locks your ecu. But with a bench unlock you can unlock it. This method does NOT work for 06/2020+ ecu's as of right now.

So I took my G20 330i to Above and Beyond Performance (West Palm Beach, FL), on the merit of a couple of users on bimmerpost (ie Sherv). My purpose was only to make the 2.5 hr drive from Orlando, just have my DME unlocked, but it turned out to be much more valuable journey. I have to tell you, I was completely amazed by my experience there, because I honestly, am not used to the type of professionalism, expertise, feedback, and openness.

First of all, the owner Brian was prompt and greeted me on time. He explained to me exactly what he was doing, and let me watch him perform the bench unlock procedure. He went straight to work, and there was none of that 'come back next week' crap (for a 15 minute procedure). As we were engaging, I threw a few questions at him, and he was obviously capable of providing thorough answers, and even gave my some tips and suggestions, for additional mods I will be performing. I was impressed enough, that I decided to immediately purchase "DME Tuning's" 330i tune, and let Above and Beyond Performance, flash it, right then and there (I will be doing a review on DME tuning's G20 330i flash soon).

I would certainly recommend the shop to people who care about the quality of work, and expert feedback. I can't tell you how many times of gone into shops, only leaving me with a sense of worry - by what comes on as a careless or inexperienced tech, and end up leaving apprehensive or disappointed about the results, and occasionally ripped off. Fortunately, the owner at Above and Beyond Performance (and "Zach" [vinyl specialist]), do all of their own work - so it, naturally, makes sense that there is more at stake. It's no wonder the shop had a dozen exotic cars (Ferraris, Porsches, and Mclarens), in their garage. Above and Beyond Performance has developed quite a reputation for itself.

(Again, I will be doing a review on DME tuning's G20 330i flash soon - and I will post that on this forum).

Yes, eventually. Same as when the 2016 340i ECU's were locked also. Now they are OBD unlockable.

This was one of our mistakes in the past - releasing this code. Now this lesson learned.
