I hope they increase the redline for the M3 pure. The ZF 8HP is almost assuredly the only reason they capped it at 7200. One of the specs listed for the engine show that it makes peak power between 5950-7300rpm. That could be a typo, but it could also mean the engine can have a higher redline.

M3/M4 will have the same engine specifications as the just announced X3M/X4M, plus the M3/M4 Pure-specific detuned version.

I think the engine tuning might be identical. FWIW and just to avoid confusion, the specs are:

normal: 353kw / 480ps / 473hp
comp: 375kw / 510ps / 503hp

Carbon fiber strut brace optional

Looks plain compared to the one on S55.

Would be interested to know how much lower the engine sits.

What about the weight? No mention of lighter weight here.

BMW is not going to release their flagship M3 a year later with the same specs as the X3M. Expect more power and more torque and a higher redline

Doesn't anyone else think, BMW could probably rate this engine anywhere they want in a +30hp spread and it would still be accurate, and just make you feel like better about your purchase.

Let me look into my crystal ball...
"BMW found 5 more hp in the S58T1 through various intake and exhaust modifications to the S58 compared to last years X3 M for G80 M3 buyers, and it feels amazing like I just jizzed myself on the track in <some random place in spain> and was well worth the extra year wait and $71k MSRP" - Car and Driver

Let me be clear about one thing: I am most certainly not complaining about the power output I am merely stating the fact that this engine is capable of more and that BMW is keeping the best for their flagship M3.

Do you really think that from a marketing point of view they decided to have the X3M walk with the honour of the new I6 engine, well yes for now until they release the M3 mid-2020.

There is some contradictory information in the released spec sheets and if you read between the lines you know that they can squeeze more out of this engine and the redline will be at least 100 RPM higher. In my opinion this is exactly what BMW will do.

The situation would be different if the M3 would also be released in the next months but we are talking about probably more than a year between the availability of the X3M and the M3. I guess that time will tell...

I am fully with you on that. I just think its funny people focus on the published number a lot.

I mean m340i has more hp than the x3 m40i. The m5 had more than the x5 m. Will totally follow the pattern. It is a lot of marketing gamesmanship though. I mean I don't think anyone really thought the F30 335i made 300hp. Or the e90 335i . Those product managers and business analysts are earning their money.

We will never get the sound of the V8 we had with the E92 M3 but I do am pleased about the sound of my F92 (2015). Not so impressive the first minute of a cold start because the cats need to be on temperature and it does sound as a lawn mower. The new model will without doubt have a particle filter just like the F92 (2018) which unfortunately further dempens the engine sound. We will see how it sounds on the X3M. Replacing the downpipes by catless downpipes is also not an option in Belgium because it will then not pass the periodic car inspection (because of the too high NOx levels). I did install the Macht Schnell Exhaust Valve Control module to control the actuators and the sound is awesome and still a headturner.

Would have liked to see more radical engine design.. Can't see the effort anywhere close to when the S55 first came out.

Why ditch high rpm for low end torque? Can't see any reason other than solely employing AWD for all future M cars. Company moving towards the mundane solution to grip is the last thing I want to see on M cars.

I hoped this would be R&D similar to when S50 was revised to be S54 (better sump, VANOS, and higher piston speed& engine rpm) but this is just the opposite.

M division seriously needs someone at the top who pushes crazy and ingenuous ideas, not this AWDphilia.

3:10 for exhaust sounds. Sounds deeper like the B58 at idle/low revs but has some of the raspiness of the S55 at higher revs/load.

It definitely sounds similar to the S55 with an MPE.

Do you realize that S63T4 will be almost two years old when M8 comes out? And still it'll have the same exact performance as in M5.

And if someone thinks there will be a TÜ of the new S58 only a year after its initial release, they're delusional and need to take the BMW Engines 101 class one more time.

I did not realise that the OFFICIAL specs for the M8 were released but I expect at least the same HP as the M5 competition and really comparing the M5 / M8 is not the same as comparing a small SUV as the X3M with the M3. They deliberately downtuned the S58 in the X3M and release the full power of that version in the M3/M4 or finetune it further for a small bump in HP.

Imagine BMW releasing the X5M first and then releasing the M5 with the same specs? Their loyal M5 customers would not be pleased so what they did is increase it with 16 HP yet keep the torque.
