Piggyback can not hold a candle to what you get with a flash - while some may show numbers (and show draggys and dynos) the linear power delivery of a flash is just like it was given to you by the factory. And if someone claims "warranty" of a flash vs a piggyback - I would strongly encourage you to investigate their motives (point is some will start a warranty conversation while they are in fact selling a product) I've had both - no comparison :-) ps- you are in new york several members here from NY are running flash tunes-maybe hit up your local regional forum (here) to connect and ride. Warranty isn't a selling point just a difference to consider before you take the plunge on flashing as you can't go back after: https://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1739110
In terms of JB4 potential if properly setup you can make pretty good power, this is a dyno of our Z4 running JB4, exhaust, 40% E85 fuel. Almost 500whp. That said there are things you can only do by adding in a flash map like exhaust burbles, speed limiter, and a few others. |

I still don't know if I'd trust a piggyback tune until it's 100% confirmed the new software won't pick that up either. This is the exact reason I haven't tuned mine. If bmw would come out w an MPPSK for the M340 (which I seriously doubt), I would have absolutely opted for this 100% tho

My guess would be checking logs for abnormal boost levels and such

I asked this question of a current BMW dealer mechanic (who is running a piggyback on his F80) a week or so ago who happened to be at a friends house doing some work - and his response included terms like "fuel trim" and "fafsta data." I don't really understand on a deep technical level what that means. Basically said while of course he could not prove something had been installed and physically removed the evidence of engine performance manipulation by some non-factory force left tell tale signs somewhere (again don't ask me) Going on that I did a quick search and came up with some information that may also help you. It's not really one-sided which is good but in that it is consistent with what was verbally shared with me I found it of interest - perhaps you will too :-) Anyhoo hope this helps.... The screen shot was posted several years ago and while it touches on uninstalling things incorrectly it also touches on those items that were shared with me and I think gets to your question in terms of discovery methods. Also came across a post that had some good back and forth (link provided)- there are others but these are the two I booked marked that helped me better understand both sides of the discussion. Link to thread: Debate: Can BMW detect a Piggyback and will they void your warranty for it https://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...osely%20enough. Screen shot of comments from tech/forum member (from a different thread) Last edited by chenry; 07-28-2020 at 11:15 AM.. Reason: typo (I'm sure there are others I missed) |

Saw some more information regarding this basically all flash tunes are being detected now even after removal and those cars are being flagged, which could pose an issue for anyone leasing. There is a big thread on Facebook regarding this

They could always detect flash tunes before but the change now is that they are auto flagging cars. So that great relationship you have with your service advisor or technician is no longer useful. When they plug in for their standard scope it automatically determines if the car has been flashed, even if the flash was removed, and tags the VIN in BMWs system with a "suspected tuning" warning resulting in power train warranty denial. Most likely will result in lease return being refused also but not sure if that is true or rumor.

Gonna be like navigating a mine field for those looking to buy used F80's lol
I've been tempted to tune my 340 but after reading these posts I'm just gonna keep mine stock as long as I lease. If anything would go Dinan or Carbahn for warranty
