How do I pre-order a G80 today?

I'm looking to get my hands on the new 2020 BMW M3 (G80) when it comes out. I'd like to know if anyone has experience reserving/Pre-ordering a BMW in advance of a car's release.

Specifically, how does the process work? Does BMW have a formal process for this sort of thing or do I just walk into any dealership and lay down a deposit? Can I expect to have any control over the options, in particular the lack thereof, I'd like or does my deposit merely reserve me the right of first refusal for some random model that might have a plethora of options I don't want?

In short, will I have a sense of exactly what car I'm getting for what price or does this process merely put me in line to be one of the first the dealership reaches out to concerning any model/color having any (i.e. high) msrp, and possibly a dealer markup to go with it?

Thanks.

You put down a deposit to get in line at your dealer. You should negotiate how much over or under MSRP they will charge you. When specs and options are announced, you can spec it however you like.

Lol these aren't Porsche GT cars. Just go to your dealer once they get allocations. Or even buy one off the lot once they start landing at your friendly neighborhood dealers. There will be inventory

Yep you can get one when it comes out. No reason to put money down now. It's not a limited car by any means. Bmw will make more than they can possibly sell.

When the f80/82 came out, the first cars available were the dealer launch demo cars. If I recall correctly, there was an ordering guide for the launch car that may or may not have had all the options available on the customer cars. Some dealers were willing to sell these cars, others wanted to keep it on the showroom floor for display.

If you are trying to be one of the first (which is actually pretty cool if you like the attention) then I'm sure there is a dealership out there that would be willing to separate you from your money. Expect to pay MSRP plus "market adjustment". If you decide to go this route make sure you have all the pricing/ordering details in writing... not just your name on a list, because with no price agreement in place, they will surely gouge you when you are most vulnerable... when the car is sitting on the lot ready to be driven home.

When the law of supply and demand is in your favor, that's the right time to pay the deposit while getting the right discount and timely build slot.

I bought one of the first F80 M3 produced at MSRP. Manufactured in June 2015. I "pre-ordered" 1.5 years in advance by getting on a wait list at my local dealership with a $5K refunable deposit, even when there was no order guide and the car wasn't officially announced yet.

Some dealers have a wait list that you need to put deposit down to hold your spot. Some just have a list and then they go down the list and ask for MSRP + thousands of markup until they find a customer willing to pay for it.

Just check with your local dealer and find a salesperson who can get you on a list. You are usually not a priority to the salespersons because you are not buying immediately, so a lot of them just brush you off and tell you to come back when the car is announced and order-able.

Good luck.

This is true— it was easy to order my 2008 M3 even as new V8 was getting dealer mark ups on the west coast and easy to order my 2019 M5 but the 2018 GT3 was a different story. There are lots of bimmers out there, should not be different with this latest M3. Perhaps BMW makes too many cars...

In the UK there is no formal or structured framework for placing pre-orders at this stage. Many franchises will take £500 deposit and reserve a production slot for the customer.

Later when BMW AG assign manufacturing slots to dealers, these in turn can be given to queuing customers in the order they joined the queue.

This is usually run In house, typically refundable and a great way to get your foot in!

-I just wanted to see if anyone has placed a deposit on the new M3/M4 yet? Are dealers in the USA even starting a list or are they waiting till the car is shown to the world in a couple months?
-Are there people already on the waiting list?
- Just wondering if it is worth it to get on a list now, or wait.

-I do NOT have a relationship with any local dealers, what will be the best way to to get the best price while also putting a deposit down (should I be checking with dealers throughout my state)?

It’s not a limited run car, there’s no point paying over the odds just to be the first on insta.

I told my mate yesterday I won’t act until I’ve seen and driven. Of course in Europe we have the extra worry of it sounding crap due to OPF’s. Which my CS doesn’t have and still gives me the feels every single drive.

They may have to give people a 15% discount to move these ugly cars.

I have a solid relationship with my dealer going back 20 years and many cars. I got one of their 3 first F80 allocations just by asking. I plan to do the same with the G82 AWD which unfortunately sounds like its still about a year to go.

My sales manager knows that I'm waiting to place a G83 comp order within the next year when available as they botched ordering my 2020 F83 comp replacement. Highly doubt a waiting list for the G83 compared to the G80.

Do you think the G80 comp will be a year away? I still am confused whether they are offering the base in an automatic.

My understanding is initial launch will be 6MT RWD, and ZF auto AWD. Who knows when that will actually be though. Competition should come later in the year (or even in 2022).

This, along with the grilles being bizarre-looking, is why I've checked it off my list when the F80 lease is up next April. Looking at the X3M, F90, or even one of the new Cadillac Blackwings

BMW has already announced that at the start of production in November 2020 two models of both the M3 and M4 will be built. These will be:

Pure: 6MT - RWD (Only) - 480HP
Competition: AUTO - RWD - 510HP

Delivery should begin in Q1 2021.

The AWD versions of the Competition models will not start production until June 2021 with delivery beginning in the fall.

My SA and Sales Manager are well aware that I want to be in on the first allocation possible, though at this time it is too early to sign docs, and checks.

Will be ordering an M4 Competition - Auto - RWD - IOM Green with Cognac interior if possible, though Ynguldyn's list of interior colors from last December does not include it.

It's worth noting that there has been no info stating that base-auto RWD models will not be available. All bmw has really said is that the 6mt will be on the base model and competition models will have automatic.

Considering autos make up the vast majority of M3/M4 sales I expect base-auto rwd at launch right along side competition-auto rwd

Place a deposit if you have cash to burn.

With BMW UKs RRP pricing model every car needs about 15-20% discount and APR support to be realistic.

Fair play anyone taking early delivery. I regretted even getting a 1st year F82 prior to updates and the genera snatch of the torque delivery before things changed for the better.

Can't wait to see the new cars though.
