They are still analog in the traditional sense with a needle moving up and down with a dial of numbers. But the display is so much cleaner and crisper-- like HD. And I like the way it all goes to black when the engine is shut down. When I think of digital, I picture a Casio digital watch type of read out and the new instrument cluster is definitely not "digital" IMO.
I believe OP is referencing the full digital cluster found in the new Z4, 8 series, X5

Smile Gauges will be Fluid

Sometime in the near future, there will be a paradigm shift and we will have full control of how we want to see pertinent data to assist our driving. Gauges will become an extinct word, when it comes to dashboards, which will also go away.

I am afraid windshields will be getting a lot more expensive though.

Do these all digital dashes look wonkey ( or happen to be 90 degrees shifted, and blanked out ) when people wear polarized sunglasses?

And bleh to slow LCDs in cold weather too.

I have the digital gauges on my 440 no difference with polarized sunglasses. Only the hud is affected

I like the gauges on my M2 LCI - shown on left of the photo below. They are not digital, rather they are back-lit analog, which updates the look, and makes them actually readable (vs. non-LCI ones) in all lighting conditions. The only digital gauge I have is the AWRON. I think these would be perfectly acceptable for the new G8x, but I agree with most here that by the time these cars come to market, they will have all digital gauges.

The Corvette C7 has been doing this since it was introduced in 2014. Just like the F8x M3/M4 having Comfort/Sport/Sport+ modes, the C7 has different instrument display modes, such as Tour, Sport, and Track, including custom options.

My take is not on just a few select cars, the paradigm shift occurs when everyone embraces it and gauges are no longer used, just OLED, LCD or what ever will be used.

I see you haven't driven a modern American V8. While I do agree with you that the previous Mustangs (and Camaros) were pretty much crap, the modern Mustang and Camaro are excellent cars. The Camaro SS 1LE outhandles an M4 Competition. It also has a far better gearbox and far better suspension. Interior is still crap, though, but excusable for the performance-to-price ratio.

The Mustang GT is also a great car. It doesn't handle as well as the Camaro or M4, but it is very close and light years better than the Mustangs of previous generations. The new GT is also available with MagneRide, so while it may not get the track numbers of the M4, it will ride better doing it.

These American coupes are now the standard in affordable performance coupes and are not running jokes anymore. They run the gamut from fun rental car to the absolute fastest coupe you can buy for under $100,000 both in a straight line AND on a track. (I'm not including the Challenger because it is a pure muscle car straight line machine).
