US F30 320i owners, what is your plan for your next vehicle?

I would like to hear from US owners of the 320i model since there will be no direct replacement for that car in the G20 lineup.

Was the F30 320i a launch model in the US? For some reason I thought it launched after the 328i and 335i.

By this measure the M340i isn’t a launch model either.

It was not a launch model, but unlike with the F30, a G20 320i is not expected to be added to the US lineup. Instead, the F44 2 Series Gran Coupe is coming, and the 228i will slot in as the new entry level four door sedan in the US.

Indeed it isn't, but we know it's coming (middle of this year). So, unlike US F30 320i owners looking to update to an equivalent G20 offering, F30 340i owners have nothing to worry about other than a six month wait.

I was hoping for the new entry-level car to adopt the 1 series name plate

There is the F52 1 Series Sedan sold in China and some other regions, but BMW has decided not to bring it to the US.

The 2 Series Gran Coupe name is consistent with the 4 Series, former 6 Series, and upcoming 8 Series Gran Coupes. I think consistency is good. It would perhaps be more obvious to the consumer what the strategy is if the 1 Series sedan were also sold here, but that doesn't seem likely to ever happen, even as Mercedes plans to sell a new A Class sedan along side the new second generation CLA "four door coupe" in the US and other regions.

The 320i didn't come out until the 2014 model year. I don't think it was initially expected until the A3 sedan came out. It could come back.

If I had a 320i and needed a comparably priced sedan, I'd get a 2.0T Genesis G70 ($34,900). That car is seriously good and is available with a manual transmission. It handles better than the F30 and is overall a good upgrade to the F30.

The F30 320i (and other variants - 318, 316 available in Europe and elsewhere) have sold reasonably well. In fact, it is a fairly well-rounded, solidly built RWD car for those who don’t “need” the extra HP. YMMV.

If the G20 320i, 318i, 316i will continue to generate healthy sales, the bean counters at BMW Munich/BMWNA have no reason to kill it. The 2-series GC cannot fully replace the 320i’s market IMO. Only time will tell of course.

Full disclosure: We have a 2018 320i and X5M in our garage.

There is no chance BMW is killing those models, well except the 316i which was replaced by the 318i back in 2015 (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_3_Series_(F30)).

This thread is only about the US market. In that market, the intention is indeed to replace the 320i with the 228i as the entry level BMW sedan. In other markets, the G20 320i is already available and will no doubt remain a volume seller for the brand

Yeah. I love my wife’s E90 and how xDrive feels. I was trying to hold out for the G20 but then I saw the pricing, I saw the release window on the 340 and I basically ended up with an AWD Stinger GT2. I can handle a couple of grand but BMW make some ridiculously illogical choices about package limitations. Because of that the difference quickly blows out to 10 grand and at that point I’m out. I can handle Korea’s idea of a luxury sports car if I’m saving 10+ grand.

I am an owner of a second F30 320i, in general happy but can not wait to change it for a G20 330i. My opinion is my 320i has been a good experience, but at least this time made me go to Audi and Mercedes dealers to see if there is another option. Just found interesting Mercedes C300 coupe and E300 coupe, both nice but not BMW....

Could you please elaborate what were your sources of disappointment with the F30 320i? FWIW, comparing to a 330i/340i isn’t fair as the price point is quite different.

I got an X1, at the time my lease was up there were no reasonably optioned 330s available (only base or loaded). Definitely like the extra luxuries and power I got with the X1, although I do miss the sedan and RWD dynamics. Looking forward to getting back into a 3 series, whether it be a 330 or (hopefully M340) when my lease is up. I didn’t think the 320 was such a bad car, it was just not powerful enough to beat my sisters 4 cylinder altima from a stop light!

And that's why there should not have been a 320i. Like I said , embarrassment

The last sentence is exaggerating. There is no way a 4 cylinder Altima beats 320i.

Just placed my order for a G20 330 XDrive with Mpack.
For me...any other sedan automaker was not in my head, period.

Although, I did consider a Land Rover to switch to an SUV. The Discovery HSE.
MY heart and my head kept me with my 3 series which I LOVE.
