Race chip for 330e

Just took delivery of 330e touring and have been looking at remapping or race chip tuning.
Anybody have any experience of this?
Racechip advertising makes it look very easy to install and remove for servicing etc.
I don't want to do anything to invalidate warranty.

But chipping it will invalidate your warranty - if they know it has been done. And apparently now they can tell if a car has been chipped and removed for service....

I was going to have mine remapped by DMS. Some bonkers figures giving me 405bhp. This is the first car I have owned where I haven't pulled the trigger & i am glad I ddidn't Had no end of troubles with my 330e & software, bet BM would have noticed and invalidated the warranty & charged me for all these visits to the dealer my car has had.

Bought an S3 18 months ago and remapped it the same day, a brand new car. Went to audi for services & some warranty work & they didn't bat an eyelid. Think its very manufacturer/ garage/dealer dependant.

Hold off for a few months & see if you have any issues like the rest of us have namely with software!

Ive just ordered, havent fitted yet
Ive read a thousand reviews and comments and just decided to do it
I work on the principle if racechip werent good you couldnt keep it quiet, tbe fact that its a piggy back and can be removed and car put back to stock also a huge plus
My nephew has one on his TTRS and had dynod and an extra 60bhp
Racechip advise 41bhp extra on 330e
I went GTS as it gets a retune free if you change the car, which mine will be in a couple of years so can take iff and uae on tbe new one too

Nice. Was the fit process easy? Any plans to measure difference (dragy etc)?

Yes, most time taken cable tieing and placing the actual unit
I disconnected the battery also, just an extra precaution may not have been necessary
I have thought about getting a dragy bur not as yet
It does feel a chunk faster dont need dragy to tell me that
Going out today to give it a better try

I'll be interested to know whether BMW picks it up on your next service, like they've started doing with coding.

It can be removed, or even take off the unit and put on deactivation plug back in
As it's a piggy back you aren't altering the existing ecu,s
As far as coding, I've done mine, just been in for 3 days getting new wiring loom for windows fitted, although not a service not a thing mentioned rebvious coding been done
M animation and dash would be most obvious

Allegedly even if things like a JB4 or racechip are removed BMW can tell, they apparently record boost pressures and power delivery and many other sensors etc and if any of these are outside of the figures expected on a standard car then the car is flagged as possibly tuned/modified….however there's obviously a big difference between flagging a car and proving anything.

Its brilliant, no issues, no warning lights, super smooth and very noticable the extra power and torque. Really impressed

Hijack thread I know, so sorry! Did you go for the XLR as well? I'm having throttle an on/off issue with my throttle and this could remedy it.

Tks in adv

Sorry no. I originally got it for my 1.6T engine in the Hyundai which made a significant difference once it learned the piggyback.
Note that Racechip implies that only close to or wide open throttle is affected by their device which is likely whythey also have the XLR product.

Ptronic

Has anyone considered a tuning box on a 330e? I put a Ptronic tuning box on mine. They're made in Belgium.

I've had them on three other cars. My X3 diesel has done more than 220,000 trouble-free miles with a PTronic box. PTronic give more power plus a big increase in low end torque. IMO it also complements the low end torque of the electric motor of the 330e better than the standard 330e. Fuel economy is improved too.

PTronic claim a boost to 370hp but in my experience they're conservative. They base the torque on a misquote of the original spec, rather than what I understand to be 420Nm. If the claimed 32% gain is applied that would mean 555Nm. With the PTronic box the 330e becomes more like a 340i (but hybrid driving and twice the fuel economy).

I asked a local BMW specialist to check eveything was fine as I was terrified of damaging the hybrid system. He was very happy with the tuning box and grinning from ear to ear after a test drive. Coming from a workshop where they tune up M cars, that said a lot.

I did some 0-60 runs but at around 6degC the tyres kept spinning. I clocked 4.9s on one run where I managed to limit the spinning a little. I might try again when it's warmer. I'll also work out how to use launch control and put on better tyres. It goes as fast as I could ever want it to, that's enough.

I'm sure there are cheaper and/or more powerful tuning options. The Ptronic tuning boxes are not cheap but they work with the manufacturers of each engine and, in my experience, they're not at all detrimental. I have no association with PTronic in any way, other than as a long term user.
