Knocking noise

Just wondering how many G20/G21 owners have had a front end knocking noise at low speed on slightly uneven road surfaces. Doesn’t make the noise over speed bumps or larger bumps however. Appears under 20mph and appears loader on warmer days.

Mine has been in all week and the dealer has changed the wishbone, droplink, damper and strut mount. Still the noise persists.

I’ve a feeling a lot of people won’t have heard it if they have the radio on but seems to be a common issue on the G20 Facebook group.

Yup. Mine still does it. I've been to BMW 3 times now, even had my left control arm and components replaced due to some damage and still knocking. I have a hunch it's in the steering column and not suspension....

Frustrates the hell out of me.

I’ve had both control arms, drop links, damper and strut tops changed. Still makes the noise. It’s back with BMW to hopefully find the issue. All points towards the steering rack area to me.

Are you taking yours back to BMW?

I've not got front end knocking noise, yet... but definitely rear nearside. Dealer has said its the seat belt holder in the parcel shelf (!) and is replacing that this week. Definitely not that. Clearly seems suspension related to me.

What noise do you hear from the rear? Is it under certain circumstances that it occurs?

A knocking noise when going over uneven road surface from the rear near side somewhere. Sounds very much like coming from the suspension to me but dealer could find no issue apart from the seat belt holder in the parcel shelf not clipping in and holding the belt properly.

They are adamant that's knocking and ordered a part about 2 months ago.

Kind of got used to it now, plus it gets drowned out by other creaks and rattles now.

My noise is definitely front passenger side - suspension or steering related. Hopefully the dealer gets to the bottom of it this week.

Seems a common issue that has become more obvious during 5e recent warmer weather.

Sure it is not the steering rack?

The E91 did it a bit, same with E61 and the F31 did it badly.

Hell yes I am. I just drove around downtown with cobble stone roads and it's clunking like a NYC cab. Def feel the steering rack rattle. It also seems that when I'm braking while going over bumps it rattles more. Something is lose in there???

My 330e has just started with a faint clunk that sounds like it’s coming from the front left passenger side. Only happens when the cars warm, slowing to a stop and feathering the brake.

Also get a slightly louder clunk when I come to a stop.

Cars been in the garage this morning and they’ve found the Brake Reaction Bush is worn and needs replacing.

Not too sure if this is similar to your issue but could be worth a shout.

Stay safe guys.

As matter of interest, does it do the same noise when accelerating?

Be miffed if its something that has worn and needs replacing. Car is only 4 months old.

Mine only does it when coasting 5 mph and braking.

Cars done over 25,000 miles so not surprised somethings worn.

Had similar on the x3. Top Mount replaced and it went away, but sounds like they have tried that already for you

So.....my cars been back at rhe dealership for a week now....and they are still "looking at the car"

Clearly everyone's lost as to what exactly to fix or replace.

Maybe I should have stuck with Benz???

Maybe not directly related but when checking out rear boot parcel of my new 330e I noticed the storage shelf on nearside that the wheel nut/tow eye tools are only tied down on one end and other end can bounce off plastic shelf to create knocking noise when going over rough surface or speed bumps etc. I placed a cloth under the loose end to secure it.

Just a slightly off-topic question, did you get a tow eye supplied with your 330e? Was it a new build? Having ongoing discussions with BMW UK as to whether they should have supplied a tow-eye with mine. They say not as "the PHEVs shouldnt be towed".

Update! Got my car back today and they had replaced the F.R lower control arm and did another alignment. So far....no more clunking...and it feels a bit tighter all round.

I'll keep everyone posted as weeks go by.

on a unrelated note. Had a 2021 530i as a loaner for a week....i seriously miss my 330i.

A 330e ? And a recent(ish) build?
Useful to know thanks. Getting such mixed messages from different parts of BMW.
BMW UK saying they shouldn't be supplied with one as the hybrids should never be towed and recovery involves specialist "skates", my supplying dealer saying the 330e has never been supplied with them, and BMW Sheffield (via Genius) saying they should all be supplied with one.

Not wanting to put a dampener on this but I’m pretty sure it’ll come back within a few days.

There’s a few people on the FB G20 page, including me, who have all had the same part changed. Noise comes back again once the ambient temperature rises or the car has had a long trip and the engine bay is warm.

Mines currently on week three at the dealership without a fix.

yup. i heard it last night while breaking to a stop and the left wheel was going over a crack in the road. (5-10mph)

Is this purely on adaptive suspension models? and does the M340i suffer from the same problem?

Maybe I should consider a new 4 series instead??
