Yes the 2021s sound very lame. The shift aggression has been taken away.

I have 22' and do not have touchscreen as well as passenger lumbar delete. I believe that is all that was removed due to chip shortages that would otherwise be standard.

there is a side by side comparison here for 2020 and 2021. you can definitely tell the difference.

Didn't know there would be such a huge difference in sound
Only difference is the popping and burble otherwise it's just as loud

Admittedly, I love the car, so I am not the best arbiter of things when it comes to the car.

With that said, the car is not quiet especially on cold starts, yes it does seem that there are less pops and burbles, but to me it is not a big loss.

Personally, a bigger loss to me was the 360 camera which my dealer was too incompetent to add no matter how much I asked them to do so.

I have vrsf catted dp with custom exhaust by my shop and this is what the upshifts sound like. The dp definitely helps make those upshifts sound louder

Your car is a 2020 so you already have upshift sound programmed in. Dp and exhaust amplified what’s already in there. Poor 2021 and 2022 owners (like me) don’t have that upshift sounds anymore in their cars.

Just to chime in, I have a 2020 m340i and when I first got it I was on the best software version pre de tune so around 400hp my car was fuckin loud as shit massive crackles pops bangs you name it. I took it in for service one day, all of that glorious sound was gone. Be careful out there they are putting new software updates to make the 2020s sound super quiet

The only mods you really have are muffler and catted dp? So that upshift fart is really from the downpipe huh

Thank you for that! I'll be careful when going to dealer for maintenance. I have a 2020, so I don't want any updates!

Upshift farts are from the 2020 stock tune. Starting with 2021 model year BMW decided to take all the fun away and removed exhaust pops, burbles and upshift farts.

If you have a 2020 and take your car to the dealer they will update your DME and you will join the “sounds slightly better than a Camry” club

I thought this also but I took my car to the dealer and they did a software update but it sounds the same as before on my 2020.

My gf got the latest brake software update and didn't notice any changes to the pops or exhaust note!

Under WOT she still gets the original upshift bangs and retains the oem pops/burbles when revving!

Trying to convince her to get a downpipe and mpe to make it louder, but maybe I'll need to get it for her...we'll see

Yeah, I updated my 2020 myself without being aware of this. Upshifts are way quieter with no sharp cracking sounds like before and burbles/pop volume was reduced by about half. Sometimes the car will "wake up" and get loud as hell like before, but it rarely happens and doesn't seem to be tied to driving style.

Pretty upset about it, I just had a AWE exhaust put on and the car sounded perfect before the update. It still sounds good on throttle but all of the extra noises are effectively gone.

I had the brake recall performed awhile back. Did not notice a difference in exhaust sound or pops. Mine are even louder now including the upshift sound now that I have the AA downpipe installed.

The 2020 models before the dme updates use to have a pretty loud "shift fart" that almost sounded like a pop/burble when the car upshifted. The recent updates made it a lot less noticeable and quieter.

And for some reason the G26 is somewhere in between. If I go into sprint mode I can get about 20 consecutive pops and bangs when I get off throttle.

Try that and let me know!

I’m a new owner of 2023 330i LCI in Australia and am wondering what I noticed is this noise. It was kind of a cool sound coming from upshifting gears in manual and sport mode - I might have also heard it in manual comfort mode with the driver side window down. I was wondering what this noise might be. I didn’t have to floor the accelerator though - I kept it under 4000rpm.
