Can you remote start through an app?

I just got my 2020 330i with the remote start. I was under the impression that you could remote start the car through the connected drive app, but I cant find an option to do it. Is the key fob the only way to remote start?

The "Climatize now" option in connected drive is remote start via the app.

The button in my CD app says "Start Engine Now".

I don’t have that button. Mine has a “Climatize now” option. Clicking on that takes me to a page which says car will run for 15 mins after it remote starts and blah blah with a “confirm” option at the bottom. Hitting confirm starts the car. I tried taking a screenshot but the app doesn’t allow me to take it. I use an android phone.

Sounds like it's the same button, just labeled differently on Android vs iOS.

Yes, you can start the car through the app. But, I find that it's pretty unreliable.

I took delivery of a 2019 330xi last week and I am questioning the remote start function already because it does not heat or cool the car, nor does it activate the defrosters. Basically, as far as I can tell, it just warms the engine. Nothing else turns on until you press the brake and the start button. So what are the benefits of a remote start in a BMW? My parents have a Hyundai that costs half what a BMW costs and their remote start activates whatever is appropriate given the weather conditions at the time.

You are correct, it only starts the engine and turns ventilation on, nothing else. It's pretty useless in my opinion. I still end up walking out to the car on cold mornings to turn on seat warmers, heated steering wheel, and front/rear defrosters before actually getting in the car. And It doesn't even get that cold where I live...I'd be super unhappy about it if I lived up north.

I’m very disappointed. It doesn’t even make sense. German engineers are supposed to be the best in the world and all about function. This feature has no function.

Agreed. And I edited my last post, apparently it doesn't even resume previous HVAC functions. It only turns on ventilation/fan, no heat/cool.

Then something is wrongIn your car. Mine turns on the AC at whatever setting it was left at. I leave it at 72degF in my car and when I use remote start, it always turns the AC on to that temperature. I remote start my car a minute before I leave and by the time I’m in my car, it is warm. It doesn’t turn on the heated seats or steering or windshield defroster. But at least, the car isn’t freezing and I’m happy. I’ve done it when temps were 25degF and it worked perfectly, every single time. So much so that I hate taking the other cars out now.

Ah, then I guess I was right the first time. I thought it did that but then read a few other posts that said it didn't. I guess I need to play around with it some more. Though would gladly trade the remote AC for remote everything else mentioned above.

I agree. I would’ve liked it to heat the seats and steering at the very least. But hey. It’s the first time I’m owning a car with remote start and I’m happy it does this bit at least. Remote start should be made standard and not optional. I’d gladly pay upto $500 more for any car to come with it standard from the factory.

I happily stand corrected. I remote started the car and let it run for 12-13 minutes. When I got in, it definitely wasn't blazing hot, but it wasn't cold either. It seems to definitely rely on the settings that were in place when the car was last turned off. I'm just glad that it does warm the car up, even if it takes almost the max start time of 15 minutes.

Yup. It remembers previous settings. It sucks that we can set Ac temperature via the app. But yes. What I do is, I turn the ac to max heating before turning the car off in case I want to use remote start (which is almost all the time especially since it’s winter).

you can have your heated seats also on, if you go in to setting and choose the option to have them on automatically if its below a set temperature. i dont have the exact setting handy but its there. Now if i can get the actually remote start to work id be great

You can. I’ve done that. What I meant is. You can’t get heated seat to start using remote start. Only AC turns along with the engine.

The Connected App has never worked for me. The dealer wants to do a software check and give me a loaner. I hate going back and forth to the dealer. My car still shows to be at the dealer and none of the functions work.
