Rear Cross Traffic alert never getting triggered?

Has anyone else had the rear cross traffic alert work for them?

I was backing out recently, and a car was crossing behind me -- I expected the rear cross traffic alert to go off but it didn't. In my wife's car (Not a BMW), if a car is coming while you're in reverse - it beeps and shows an arrow on the backup camera screen to show where the traffic is coming from.

I wasn't moving, just in reverse because I saw the car coming using the "old school" method of turning my head and looking - not sure if I need to be moving for it to go off. In my wife's car, it goes off whether you're moving or not - just need to be in reverse.

I double checked and it is turned ON already too in the iDrive Settings.

I watched this video - and the car is always moving (very slowly) when it goes off -

Mine works maybe 1% of the times, it's that bad. I also don't understand why we paid for something that doesn't work. I had to ensure I didn't turn it off when I turn off the lane change assist.

Coming to think of it, the damn thing has never worked in my 330i. I loved it in my A4 and I thought it wasn’t an option in this car. Went downstairs and checked and saw it was ticked. But it has never worked.

No audible warning but there's a brief red flash on the side of the screen the vehicle's approaching from. Doesn't do much good if you're using it supplement the "old-fashioned" method.

I've seen the flash a few times. The panoramic view works better for me to watch out for cross traffic.

This is one of the worst executed features on the car. I thought mine was not working as well, took it to the dealer and they said it is working fine. It turns out that you only get a very small red flash in the bottom corner of the 360 view. It will not detect pedestrians.

It is unbelievably bad, BMW should be embarrassed about this.

The safety features of this car and iDrive are so unreliable that I am sometimes afraid of the BSM indicators being wrong as well. What if it doesn't light up when it's supposed to and vice versa?

Unfortunately I can't rely on it as much as I'd like to.

I would disagree with all of the above,
It flashes on bottom corner of the screen if car is crossing and there is an audible beep if the proximity is small.
Mind you, you need to be going at slow speeds, like reversing cautiously from your drive or a parking spot and not throttling the reverse gear!

I'll have to look for the little red flash next time - but usually I'm not moving while I'm looking for it - I'm usually stopped which is why there is no beep I guess. I only look the "old school way" when I'm moving - don't trust staring at a screen.

Same here. Had the RCTA serviced, " dealer said it's fine. My kids Mazda CX-5 system works so much better. BMW could also work on the steering intervention, much too aggressive. Instead of doing their own thing maybe BMW should copy other manufacturers systems when they do it better.

My M340i worked once or two. There was no audio warning and the car only warning me when the other car is really close driving by( within 3-5 meters)
All in all it's doesn't work very well like the video

I don’t recall mine ever going off. In my old IS350 it would go off all the time and worked well.

It was amazing on the 3IS. On this car is worthless.

Amazing on the Audis as well. Nice big red arrow on the rear view screen from the direction of the car/person moving behind. No way you’ll miss it. I’ve NEVER noticed it on my 330i even though those situations have occurred. Pathetic implementation by BMW.

If you find it too intrusive, then change the sensitivity

The Rear Cross Traffic Alert in this vehicle is pretty much useless and I would never trust it and don't suggest anyone else does.

Just use it as a rough supplement but not replacement.

This feature wasn't ready for prime time just yet, BMW needs to put it back in the oven!

I had a new Infiniti truck recently with its version of Rear Cross Traffic Alert and although the graphics and resolution was pale in comparison to the M340i, the feature worked flawlessly.

BMW should take some engineering cues from the Japanese auto makers.

Same here. We have 2017 LR Discovery Sport with the same feature and it works amazing - it even notices pedestrians (and of of course any vehicle at any speed) when you back up from a parking spot for instance. It's so reliable I've never had an issue backing up just staring at the screen. With BMW I'm always using "old-school" method as the system never works. The only single time it worked in 4 months is when someone breezed at ~30mph merely 10 feet from my bumper when I was pulling out. Pathetic implementation if you ask me.

So looks like the Brits, Japs and even other Germans except BMW have got it right?

Steering intervention is either on or off.
