I hate the Auto-dimming Rearview Mirror
I just picked up my new M340i at the Performance Center last week. I can't say enough good things about the experience. Overall the car is great, it drives really nicely and looks good, too.
What I cannot stand is the auto dimming rear view mirror. There's about a 1/4" gap where it doesn't dim all the way around the mirror and the overall size of the mirror is too small to put that strip out of view. It's super distracting when headlights behind you go in and out of that strip, going from bright to dim. I'm not sure if I'll go so far as saying it's a safety issue but as I said before it's very distracting and disappointing from BMW on a car this expensive. I wonder if there's another mirror that could be fitted to solve the problem? Or if an industrious person could come up with a laser or die cut piece of tint that would fill that area. Either way I do plan to see if I can register this concern with BMW. |

Then we honestly don't know what to tell you, return the car, take the loss, and get a Honda.
I'm assuming you have sensors, blind spot detection, and other safety features and your complaining about the rear view mirror in an otherwise amazing car. Think like a human Swiss Army knife when you drive you have other tools at your disposal. |

I find it weird that both mirrors do this and how the passenger mirror doesn't dim. This is especially considering my previous F30 dimmed the entire glass and did it on all 3 mirrors.
But my F30 had a thick bezel around the edges so maybe it's some limitation with the frameless design?

I am confused. To me a rear view mirror is the one inside the car and the ones outside are side views. Yet some of the responses relate to the side view mirrors.
OP: which are you talking about? |

I think they all have the same bezel and same auto dimming feature so it's irrelevant whether it's side mirror or rear view mirror he's talking about (although I do think the OP was referring to the rear view mirror).

I was wondering the same thing. It's not the end of the world but is kind of annoying. I'm sure there is a reason why the dimming doesn't go to the edge of the glass on any of the mirrors.

Let’s call them IRVMs (Inside rear view mirrors) and ORVMs (Outside rear view mirrors) for simplicity’s sake. Hehe
And yes. Idk why but that gap seems noticeable in the BMWs. Audi has a very similar shape for its IRVM but the gap was not as noticeable, even though it was present. Same for ORVMs. Plus it sucks that the passenger side ORVM doesn’t auto-dim in the new bimmers. I wish it did. By gap. I mean the edges on the mirrors that doesn’t dim. |

It's harder to get a proper pic or the inside mirror, demonstrating the boarder in question.. |

It hasn't bothered me in the side mirror. The rearview, as noted, is particularly annoying and distracting. Typically you'd have more cars behind you than alongside you so that mirror sees more action, even so when cars were in the side mirror it wasn't an issue.

It's like that with both.... pretty obvious if you own the car you can tell.

I have no idea why that was done, because it is NOT an improvement. |

Having had an E39 with auto dimming mirrors, after time the dimming stopped working because water penetrated the gap between glass and backing. No repair so had to change and they were pricey. Common fault.
On E91 and G30 they were as on G20. I suspect the sealing is better though unsightly but brings longevity. You can see the same thing when leaving a calculator outside! |

For what it's worth, I only noticed the sideview mirrors on my m340 looked bad, it was only after seeing this thread that I noticed the rearview mirror had the same design. |
