That's about what many have expected given BMW trends, but it's going to disappoint a number of folks who were hoping for 500hp. I'd bet it will hit 500hp eventually during the lifespan of the G8x, but probably not until CS models arrive.

The other thing is, if the competition package will be there at or near launch and 475hp is also the launch target, then presumably the non-CP will have less power than that.

475 is base, not comp.

Oh, ok - I didn't realize that. In that case, 500hp will very likely be available in the competition package.

This is looking like some good news on the S58 in the M3/M4/X3M/X4M.

So, is the N74 headed for the X7? Even Mercedes doesn’t do a twelve cylinder GLS. Though they do have the G Class with V12 options.

Or perhaps the X7 will get the S63 V8 wearing the M60i name instead of just “M”.

Even if this happens (Scott's been known to talk about things that don't materialize), it's not going to happen until well into X7 lifecycle. At least a couple of years after intro, if at all.

True - there are no guarantees. Still it is an interesting possibility to ponder.

The M50i SAV models are perhaps more certain though, since we know they’ll get the N63 and that engine has been promoted to M Performance status in the M550i and upcoming M850i.

It makes absolutely no sense in making a 7 series X model, without using the V12.
The 7 series flagship has the V12, and an even more purposeful model with this exact engine is the X7.
When you have the brilliant engine, use it god damn it.
And while i´m at it, use the V12 in the 8 series as well.
Never forgotten the sound of the E31 with stainless steel pipes with that glorious V12 sound, it makes the V8 sound sound like a baby,
The S58 is coming together nicely, should see CS with about 500 hp, an a GTS/CSL with water injection with 550ísh?
Cant wait to see the X3 og X4 M versions, should be special.

people looking for a number I would rather have 440 hp that actually makes it to the ground as opposed to 501 hp that can't all be put to the ground.

What am I saying.. most of these people will never use all 475 hp.. they just want to crow that their car won a magazine test or won the Hp wars on paper.
Yes indeed. the disappointment will be strong .

I believe this is the first time the M3/4 will share an engine with an SUV. The reptilian part of my brain just hates that.

Yeah, not sure where it will end. The market demands more HP with each rendition, as well as lower 0-60 times. Car manufacturers all play the game to keep up, with BMW being arguably slightly slower than MB or Audi to bow to market pressures (at least with their M cars). Any number of inexpensive modern cars can beat my E39 M5 and Z4M coupe to 60 mph these days, but my older Ms are so fun to drive because you can actually use a lot of their power in daily driving. Not so much with my F80, between how powerful it is and the need to not go sideways on the street! The F80 is a fun car, but to really understand it you almost have to be on a track.

Sure, I want a modern version of the E39 M5 for my next DD - it would be lighter due to aluminum and composite carbon, MT only (hah!), RWD, 400 hp, 370 lb ft, normally aspirated. A last hurrah, then, before electric cars take over the earth (and I have to admit, I DO worry about pollution). Unfortunately, I'd probably be the only buyer...

Still, 7er is going to be the only V12 other than RR for at least the next two years.

Too soon. If it happens (and it should), I'll have something to say about it next year.

Think about it this way: this is the first time M3 will give something away for X3 to use. Generous.

It still exists on paper. That's all I can say about it.

And if that's not enough, I'm sorry. *Cough* M2 Racing *Cough*.

How long into the model line production did the F80 ZCP come out? I'd be willing to wait.

Maybe from a dig, which only matters for drag and stoplight racing. That extra hp will be used whenever the car is in motion which is 99.99999999999999999% of the time. Not saying that AWD is a bad idea, it's a great, but there is a lot of fun to be had with a RWD 500hp sports sedan/coupe.
