This works for me as I'll be looking for a new one in late 2025, which was putting me right at the "wrong" time as there was doing to be 9 months till the next touring was out. Now it'll be 2.5 years away so getting an LCI makes sense

Basically the same that is happening with the Porsche Macan. Next gen will be electric only and the current Macan got it's second facelift last year so it can last another 3-4 years.
That doesn't make sense as 3 series sells well.

I betting it's a combination of supply chain and new tech. I believe the 3 series will be the first on the new platform.

Last year, BMW sold 490,969 3 Series/4 Series models, making the pair by far and away the best selling Bimmers of 2021. That’s about 76,000 more units sold than the next best-selling BMWs, the X3/X4 siblings, which sold around 414,000 models.

I doubt that... They will continue to refine the current and add tech as it makes sense.

Again Bmw is following the trend of what market demands vs forcing EVs as again a large percentage of the world is not for EVs nor the infrastructure.

Some manufacturers are going to skip and go full EV but not all are worldwide products and don't want to invest in Euro7 emissions. Needs.

That's a real bummer. Maybe they could then launch a proper hybrid like a 345e 🥰 That would be my dream car

That will allow BMW to keep selling ICE cars in underdeveloped countries like Russia or the US for the next decade or so, but serious ICE development is over.

Some other brands are doing this as well to all the uncertainty surrounding an EV transition. There's politics at play, consumer demand, infrastructure hurdles, etc. Legacy manufacturers have to be very careful how they navigate it.

The current Boxster/Cayman have been around for 9 years now. Lexus IS also 9 years old and got a second refresh instead of a redesign. Porsche Macan also just got a second refresh instead of a complete redesign at model year 7.

Interesting how there's a pool of forum members passionately claiming the elimination of buttons in iDrive 8 is rooted in the desire to cut costs; yet nobody here seems to be claiming this extension of the existing platform is related to cost cutting.

I would bet this is the last petrol 3 series and they are giving it time so they can have the new electric platform ready.

I’d take the other side of that bet all day, every day.

This is likely about amortization across a sufficient number of years to make the financials work. And it’s a great platform - why not? I suspect we’ll see common trends across the entire industry.

I disagree with some.

Forget the name, the i4 is an electric 3 Series, so they are already doing what some are suggesting- going all electric. They aren't waiting to do it, it's done.

The 3 is produced in Germany, Mexico and is it still South Africa? Regardless, many factories across the world to change tooling. Plus the current car is still competitive in design, the market is uncertain, and new parts are hard to come by.

They could also sell it alongside an "e3" - an electric 3 series while the G20 soldiers on as a legacy model. Check the Nissan Rogue, it's been done before. This will allow them to still sell the car in places that demand fuel, while larger markets get electric.

And they need time.

The most-registered luxury car in the US last year was Tesla, by a long shot. BMW was a distant second. The i4 is impossible to get. Gas is insane. All of this points to one thing.

I love you, inline-six. Rest in piece.

Not a bad thing. The G20 is still the best looking and best performing car in its segment., beats rivals including Mercedes outright.

a super welcome thing ... at least for me, I own the non LCI model and I would like to keep it a little longer, I guess starting with 2027/2028 I will try something new 100% electric from series 3 if I can make the trips of 2500km in a timely manner!

In other words, they are going back to the pre-1990s 7-8 year product lifecycles. By the time the current G20 (Launched 2019) ends production in 2027, it will be an 8 year old platform.

I think that the G chassis 3 series will be continue to be fondly appreciated in the future as it's going to be the last 3er that is a direct descendent of the OG car. It has just the right amount of "future" design and tech elements without dishonoring it's history.

The next car will likely be predominantly EV and filled with screens/tech that takes away from the joy of actually driving the car.

Also 3-Series production at plant Rosslyn in Pretoria, South Africa, finalized with the end of production life cycle of the F30. The plant switched to X3 SUV production to cover other markets.

I had a 2011 E90 made in South Africa and it was a very good car with solid fit and finish.
