sorry, but forget that rumours. nothing is going to be better.
we had that allready in germany. bmw changed the sound design
in september/october 2019. people who got their cars before were lucky at the beginning.

...unless bmw changed those cars, too via update. and they did it without any info before.
for example... you went to a dealer for a service and that they did a update. forced by bmw.
peoole picked up their cars and the sound was gone.

long speech... sound is gone. will not come back after break in! that is the new trend!
regulations and restrictions comminh to you, initiated by the european union.
Stupid EU regulation... sorry for my language mate.. but yeah, luckily M340i is being CKD in our country so the loud sound is still there.. we are not adhered to any funny regulations.

Do the '20 and 21' get louder in sport mode? or is it the same note in comfort and sport?

Sorry for the ?, my wife has a '17 with MPK and trying to learn the difference. Hers is mellow in comfort but sounds like an automatic shotgun in sport mode ( after 1 minute warm up time) and is only getting louder as the miles accrue.

Op did you on the 21 go to engine sounds through settings? My coworker has a 21 x3 m40 and engine profile was in comfort for all drive modes. 21 m550 has it too, and is still just as loud and poppy, as well as his x3 m40.....doing some digging in now

Could this also be an OPF change or did the 2020 model already have an OPF?

Not acceleration but the start stop system feels way better, shuts off at speed so you don't feel the on off happen. Super smooth in wife's m440

What do you mean "shuts off at speed"?

Auto start/stop is literally for starting the engine from a stop.

Just a little confused.

Exactly the same happened on the M135i 2.0 B48. Eurocrats and regulations are really looking to take all driving pleasure away

Correct but because it's now a 48v hybrid system, the car will shut off say at 10mph on deceleration vs when stopped, using the hybrid system instead of gas/motor to finish coasting/braking to a stop. If you get back on throttle quickly vs stopping it's not "electric" but for a few seconds it's transitioning back on vs the instant on/off so it just feels synchronized and smooth. I almost didn't notice it at first

I think that may need more explanation. Transitioning for a few seconds sounds horrible.

If I'm slowing to a stop, but then need to accelerate before the stop is complete, it better GO! If there is a "transition" that is anything less than WOT on tap, I wouldn't be happy.

If it's an ECO-MODE thing, that's fine. I use that on specific highway scenarios only.

So the 2021 model was just accidentally set in "Engine Sound: Comfort" (didn't even know this was a thing) while revving in Sp/Sp+?

I get the regulations and lowering decibel levels, but burbles aren't nearly as loud as high rpm screaming. To me they're there for added drama and audible enjoyment for those who like it.

And also with the G06. I have the 2021 G06 and it is not as loud as last year's model. I also do have MY20 M340 and it is very similar to this video.

I welcome the death of burble tunes. They were never a good idea. Not on a V10 like the R8 and Huracan and most definitely not an in-line 6.

I prefer the 2021 smoothness.

Nothing wrong with offering a solution for the kids here. Especially when it sounds 99% the same. Another option would be to throw a couple of wooden blocks inside a metal can in your trunk

Settings for engine sounds are in iDrive now?

Same thing happened to the X3 M40i. Loud in 19, much more toned down since.
