Is it still doing it since you tried the throttle calibration?

I got the code reader on there straight away and there's nothing relevant there but once I got going everything was normal after that. Very strange.
Had this issue today, can you check my latest thread if you have time? (Link: https://g20.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1947783)

Did you end up pinpointing the cause? Praying this isn't a serious problem and don't really want to take my car to the dealership because they might just see that I have mods and immediately blame them without giving me a fair diagnosis.

Also, may I ask if your car is stock or modified?

I havent had time to call the dealer yet to confirm if there is new software available. Might try to do that today.

So I've eventually managed to speak to the dealer and they said they're not aware of any software update but they'll do a remote diagnostic and also inspect the car physically (although I'll have to wait until October for that if I want a loan car).

Alright, please keep us updated!

Posted my question on some other forums, people are saying it might be an issue with the turbo... I might have to pay some independent BMW mechanic a visit to check if something's gone wrong.

Mine has done this a few times, it's dangerous..

It happens to me when I've gone from accelerator, to brake and then suddenly try to go again quickly like at a blind junction.. it just stalls and sits there. It's always when I least want it to happen like when trying to pull out quickly at busy junctions.

Has anyone had a fix for this?

I put it in sport then back in comfort and it fixes it.

Alright, please keep us updated!

The issue appeared again today after a while of only somewhat appearing whenever I had my AC on. Praying to God right now that a software update will remove this issue

Doesn't work for me, it happens no matter what mode I'm in, but once it decides it's done the issue just vanishes

That's the thing that's driving me nuts, I cannot for the life of me figure out what is causing this (and neither can a specialized BMW auto shop)

It happened to me a week ago. 320i. This is the 4th time i would say since almost a year that i have had my car. I was trying to make an u turn. the tires where turned left in max and i pressed gas. This time it lasted more than usually. i would say around 5 sec. I literally got stuck in the middle and luckily no cars were coming. I kept hitting the gas pedal but nothing the car was not even moving an inch. Previous times it was only for 2-3 sec max but this was the longest. After that after i finally made the u turn i put in sport mode and was flooring the gas to max and breaking. it seemed fine. throttle was ok. Anyway im not sure if it’s because the software but last time i filled cheap Super 95. It some days before this occurred. Im thinking it happened because of water in the tank but not sure. From now on I will be filling only from SHELL since they have the best quality at least here in Austria and i will see if it will happen again.

As the cars are drive by wire, doesn't it make sense that it is a software issue?

Absolutely, the throttle sensor sends information to the ECU, which will be subject to updates .

That’s entirely right, it’s got to be a software issue causing the problem.

Looks promising that it was a software issue as expected and the update has rectified it?

I wish there was decent release notes for the updates which specified whether they updated ECUs or just the main iDrive code.

Do you have drive recorder? If so, do a long press on the camera button after it happens and it’ll save the video (it saves 20 seconds in the past). That way you’ll have evidence.

I'm starting to wonder if this is something getting too hot in the engine bay - a heat soak issue. This issue happened again at the weekend and it occurred to me every time it happens I've been driving the car previously and it's been standing for a while and its after that, when pulling away, it seems to happen.

I've also had this happen to me about 2/3 times only in my ownership of the 330i, and it was in Comfort mode in all instances . In some ways, the experience was quite similar to what other members have already mentioned, my observations were:
  • I was in Comfort mode when this happened
  • Making a turn at an intersection - at low speeds which didn't require a complete stop but a slight slow-down
  • Odd/slight delay in throttle response as others have reported, than you usually have in Comfort mode
  • Appeared the car was coasting when I needed it to get going again

I feel like in those rare instances where it's failed the vehicle appeared to favour coasting and lagged unusually behind the throttle input.

To give an example, the second time this occurred, I'd just left-turned into a street slightly inclined downhill, and I was alarmed the usual slight/feather touch of the accelerator in Comfort mode wasn't registering as usual. I must have depressed the accelerator almost half-way before the throttle kicked in - luckily there weren't any cars immediately approaching me from behind as the throttle eventually kicked in.

Usual inputs before this happened were break (to reduce speed but not make a complete stop) just as approaching a junction or intersection which allows you to merge in without necessarily coming to a complete stop, make turn, start accelerating again. The results were the noticeable throttle lag.

I might also raise this with the dealer on my next visit to see if they're aware of the root cause of this or if it's a known issue. Not sure if this is software bug, or other factors, cold start etc- but there could be an issue if others have experienced this too.

I've never experienced this issue in the sports or sports plus modes though. I'd say, on rare occasions, my current remedy when in everyday city (under 60Km/hr driving) & in comfort mode is: If I need to make an urgent turn quickly I don't play around - I nearly kick down enough to get the engine roar/primed up to about the 2K rpm mark or alternatively if it's a really critical turn where I need to be quick I just switch to either of the sports modes briefly. I'll check with the dealer next time I visit, otherwise comfort mode usually works fine.

I had a similar problem with my E39 530i. Turned out to be a faulty Camshaft sensor.

So took the car to the dealer this week - they found nothing and claimed no software updates were available so no progress at all. I'm not really surprised since the fault is intermittent but it looks like BMW aren't aware of the problem.

Out of interest, when it happens, is Stop/Start on?
