Does the temperature gauge display water temp or oil temp?

In my previous F30, the temperature gauge on the dash was definitely oil temperature - it took quite awhile to get to operating temperature especially on a cold day. The car would even be blowing hot air for awhile and yet the temp gauge was still showing cold.

Now however on the G20, I notice the temperature gauge gets up to temp really fast - like within 2-3 minutes. Granted it is not winter out yet here in Virginia, most mornings are in the 50's (F). I can also get in the car 4 hours after driving it, and the temperature gauge goes to operating temperature almost immediately.

I couldn't figure out if its reading the water temperature or if this is from the new active grille that stays closed to warm up the car faster.

If it is reading water temperature - I wonder is it possible to code it to read oil temperature instead? Since it is a digital dash board, I figure it might be possible to change this.

It is water temp. It would be nice to have it coded for oil temp.

You can check oil temp with the Sport displays iDrive feature:

Is there a way to get it coded to display on the dashbord?

You can always ask the virtual assistant to tell you the oil temp as well

I ended up programming one of the "radio preset" buttons to the Sport Display so I can always look at the oil temp. It still gets up to operating temperature surprisingly quick, but obviously oil temp lags the water temp. I assume the active shutters assist here with getting oil up to operating temperature faster.

The oil cooler has a thermostat that blocks oil flow through the oil cooler until it's up to temp. So I don't believe the shutters would make as much of a difference as the oil thermostat. I wouldn't be surprised if it does make at least a bit of a difference, though.

Bring up the Sport Display, then hold down one of the radio preset buttons until it confirms on the screen that the preset has been saved.

This works with almost any screen you can bring up. I have one set for Apple CarPlay, one for Tire Pressure / Temperature, one for Sport Display and one to bring me to the A/C page so I can quickly toggle A/C on/off since that button is now gone on the G20s.
