Does anyone know if BMW invalidate the warranty if this is installed?
I just had my car serviced at BMW and I spoke to the technician. He said they can tell when any software has been modified and they will use that as an excuse to invalidate the warranty should anything happen. He recommended I wait until the warranty is finished. My concern is, say something unrelated happens – like a gearbox goes (or whatever) and it would normally be replaced under warranty, they can use the modified software as a reason not to honor the warranty. Anyone had any experience? (PS: I have a 2020 M340i G20) |

I agree there should be no issue with this little mod, it's not like I am changing boost on the turbo or something that could affect reliability. |

Couple of things:
1) Yes, they can detect you install modules and/or mods programmed. 2) At least in Europe, they can void the warranty ONLY if the thing you have modified in your car is tied to the problem you are having and trying to solve with the warranty. Example, if you modify something related with the mechanics in the engine (or related to, air intake, etc, etc) and then your engine fails, they will void that warranty. I have several and DIRECT experiencies with this. Not only with BMW, all carmakers will try to deflect a multi-thousand-dollar repair if they can. However imagine you code the blinking of the rear lights or whatever, that cannot be used to void your warranty in engine parts or some other software problems totally unrelated with rear ligths. Hope i've helped. This module is quite innocuous but it's always good to know that if you have some electrical problems, they can always say you manipulated the cabling. Just an example. |
