Vehicle tax £465pa for a 330e, so annoyed

The DVLA want £465 per year for my 330e. If it was registered one month later, after 1/4/20, it would cost me £0 per year due to the low emissions.
So annoyed.
I've complained to the DVLA but the only response was that the rates are set by the government.

Do you mean one month earlier? I'm expecting to be stung 465 for mine (thats not registered yet). £140 for tax, and £325 penalty for working my ar*e off to save up to be able to treat myself to a nice car worth over 40k

From gov.uk:

CO2 value: 37
Fuel / energy type: Petrol / Diesel Hybrid
List price £40,000 or higher?: Yes

First licence rate based on CO2 emissions and fuel type: £0.00
Standard rate of vehicle tax (from year 2 onwards): £140.00
Additional rate for 5 years from the start of the second licence: £325

Not really much you or the DVLA can do. It's a government decision unfortunately.

The £40k list price rule is an absolute joke - as someone's previously suggest, you work your arse off to be able to buy a nice car, and then get shafted for it.

The stupid thing is, it doesn't take much to get to £40k list these days. People over on the Golf forum complain about the same thing. £50k would be more suitable for a luxury car threshold.

But we get taxed on everything we earn and everything we buy so it's no surprise.

£50k would be, but there would be less qualification and that's not what they want.

The goal posts get changed all the time regarding VED. Won't be long before you're penalised for going electric, because as soon as manufacturers and consumers do what the govt want and go for the incentivised versions, less money comes in so they change tack and base the VED on something else, hence the £40k luxury car tax.

And they haven't changed the 40k for years. It should at least go up by inflation every year. About time is was raised to 45-50k. But I bet it stays at that for ages until even a Dacia Duster pays! Stealth wealth taxes!!!

No, one month later.

If registered after 1/4/20 it goes on co2 per kg.
~Before that it's the standard rate plus the over 40k tax.

The £0 is only for the first 12 months though right... which normally gets included in the new car OTR price at the dealers anyway??
After that, its £140 a month, plus the "over 40k tax" of £325 (for the next 5 years)

Very true. Shafted at every turn. I think this is the same yearly tax figure for the M340d...

If you have the V5 to hand, stick it in here:

£10 will have been paid for the first year. Then you have to pay £465 for the next five years, at which point it drops to £140 (although I'm sure it will have gone up by then).

That first table is only for year one. "First licence rates". It's the table underneath for the subsequent years.
