Car is on it's way - what to buy for it now?
Our current status is that it's on it's way to the port so it will only be a few weeks until we get it, so planning and buying bits and pieces has started!
I know it pretty much comes with everything already, but is there anything I should be looking at? We are going to carry dogs so I could do with some kind of rear sill protector or ppf for that area maybe? Thought about the Mat Protection Pack too, but think I'll wait to see what the standard mats are like. A we've got the boot floor thingy that raises rubber strips, it might be a shame to cover that with a mat. I'm struggling to think of anything else - unlike the previous, now cancelled order for the VW California - there was tons of stuff needed for that! |

I need to get a cover for the boot to for our dog. In my F31 I had one from custom covers which was shite so let me know if you find a good one.

And does the insurance premium reduce by more than the tracker cost?
I don't know what I'm missing with trackers - unless your insurance company insist on it, why bother? If they do, go elsewhere. When I had my Porsche everyone insisted on it so it was like it or lump it but on a commodity 3 series, why bother? BTW, I don't mean that to sound patronising; I've ordered one myself and I'm counting the hours until it arrives and when it does it will be my pride and joy, but it would be easy to replace and would I want it back if some scroat stole it? No chance. Whilst I'd love to get him in a room and slide hot pins under his fingernails, I most certainly wouldn't want the car back after he had thrashed it to within an inch of its life, showing off to his scummy mates. For me, it would be forever tainted. I'd much rather never see it again, claim off the insurance, claim off the Return to Invoice GAP and get a brand-new car. You might say, "that's all very well, but check out your future premiums if you have a total loss". Fair enough, but I have over 20 years protected NCD (I'm not naïve enough to think premiums won't rocket nevertheless - they can "protect" your 60% discount but there's nothing to stop them hugely loading the premium beforehand and applying the discount to that...) and if I did have a total loss (never had a loss claim before) would my next year's premium increase by a huge amount? Even if it doubled it would still be less than £600. I might be missing something?? Last edited by xenon; 02-12-2021 at 09:14 AM.. |

It was about £500 and it didn’t mention Trackstar so guessing their own version. I’m hoping it will reduce the insurance a little but as I’m only paying about £600/year for my current 340 F31, I doubt it’ll go down much.
I don’t take out any gap insurance and I once had my 1998 540 Touring recovered via its Tracker so I thought it a worthwhile investment. |

I'm still using a Travall one that we had on the car before our current one, an E61. It now fits our Passat GTE quite well, but it's getting a bit worn now. They don't seem to do one for the G21 yet though sadly.

I also need a boot cover for dog so will keep an eye for recommendations. I would like a bumper guard too that can fold over the rear bumper when dog wants to jump in.

Yes totallossgap was who I picked.
On a more interesting note, boot-floor covers with bumper protection is the topic of the day

Definitely, me too. That's what gets all the abuse, dogs or not! On our E61 with the (great) opening rear window, the interior trim below the window got very scratched as the dogs would put their front paws on there when we opened the window. So I'll have to get creative in protecting that too

Re the Tracker, I'm sure there is always a chance that it might be thrashed by a criminal but when our 540 was stolen, it was only driven to a local estate and left there for a few days to see if it had a Tracker fitted (common practice according to the Police). Ours was, so we got it back unmolested with just a few miles added.
Gap insurance or Tracker? Chacun a son gout, but I'd like one of them. |
