MHT

Anyone know why the petrol G20/1 models don’t get MHT? Can’t be a limitation of the car size as the diesels have it. Can’t be a limitation of the drivetrain as the 520i and 530i have it. Seems that the 3 series petrol are the only models that do without, other than the M340i

I have a theory: I bet on “dirty” diesels and the 6 cylinder petrol the addition of MHT is sufficient to bring the car in to a lower WLTP emissions bracket. On the heavier 5 series, even on the petrol, it also brings it down a level. I suspect on the 4 cyl petrol 3 it stays in the same bracket to BMW haven’t bothered.

They will be going, but I think the production lines need retooling. They've been done in the USA already, so expect to European plants to do it come June

I agree. It’s all about getting the average emissions down. I thinks that’s why stop-start is in our cars despite most people turning it off in real world driving.

It's all smoke and mirrors. Power wise, does a 3 litre straight six turbo engine need MHT? Nah, course not. Does it look good on paper and economy? Sure! Presumably that engine (or something like it) also now has a 15 year life span, as I guess it counts as a hybrid to 2035 when all combustion engine cars (hybrids too) go end of life.

I realise it’s all bollocks but my question really was around why the diesels get it and petrols don’t. As to whether there is any real benefit to either is a moot point.

I might be missing something ... but Petrol do have MHT but there seems to be much confusion around it for some reason. U even checked in with my dealer before delivery and he said no absolutely not.

But my G21 is registered as MHT and has the animated power flow screen to prove it. Apparently it's mainly used pulling away from standing start.

From the original post.

‘Seems that the 3 series petrol are the only models that do without, other than the M340i’

Yes the 6 cylinder 3 and 4 series petrol have it but not the 4 cylinders.

You have a 340i, I know that has MHT it the other petrols that don’t. Odd that your dealer was confused as it states quite clearly in the brochure.

Yes sorry didn't read the exam question properly! There was a lot of initial confusion when I took delivery but all sorted now.
