Alloy wheels - lacquer peeling?

Hi all,

Looking for opinions on the following:

Bought a 2020 330e recently, and have noticed that the lacquer on the alloys are peeling off - at least I think it's the lacquer.

Where it is not peeling, it is smooth to the touch, and where it is peeling, it is slightly rough.

Causing quite a bit of discolouration where the peeling is occurring as well (it is not surface dirt, tried wiping it away).

Anyone have experience dealing with this, or how much it would cost, roughly, to repair? Is it a big job or can it be done DIY?

You can try and DIY it. I followed the guide at https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1348407 to repair some minor scuffs on mine. It's not 100% perfect but it's also much cheaper than getting them diamond cut which would be about £100 per wheel.

Looks like a previous owner has done a DIY repair on some damage to the rim. These wheels are very susceptible to this type of damage, and it is possible to sand it out and relacquer - but clearly the new coat of lacquer has a limited life span, and dirt is getting under it.

I 've had a couple,e of wheels on others BMWs replaced under warranty due to lacquer issues. But this was areas that went a pearly white colour and bubbled slightly. The dealer though did use a paint thickness measurement device to check the wheels hadn't been refinished.

I think I agree with above, looks like a previous repair failing.

It's probably worth mentioning they used paint instead of recutting the wheel but they came out well and in some ways paint seems like a more maintainable setup.

I took delivery of my 320i last week from North Oxford BMW. The salesman told me the wheels were going in for a refurb, so what colour would I like, original/grey/black? "Ooh black!" I replied, being a 63 yr old big kid! My jaw dropped when I went to collect the car, and my neighbours have been salivating over it for a whole week now

So, does anyone know if these might last longer originals now?

However, on the downside, it just occurred to me that I need to tell the insurance - I hope this isn't going to cost me an arm & leg!

And please, don't anyone tell me not to bother, I know the motor insurance industry better than most.

I’d replace the grille with an all black one to complete the look

To the OP, £60 a wheel is reasonable, ask the dealer who they use, then approach them yourself
