C/D: Our 2020 M340i is a Return to Form (10k mile long term tester update)
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com "The logbook is filling up with comments gushing at how much the new 3-series and its G20 platform have improved. Former editor-in-chief Eddie Alterman noted the stiffer structure and sorted body control over the previous 3-series generation (F30), writing, 'The ride is firm, but the jolts are not.' He went on to compare it to an E39-generation BMW M5 with only one thing keeping it from its best impersonation. Care to take a guess? If you're thinking steering, you are correct. BMW, the complaint box is getting full. Are you ready to listen to us?" "We had to add two quarts of oil over the first 10,000 miles, one at 4500 miles and another just before the service visit. While adding oil to any modern engine might be cause for concern, our dealer assures us it's within normal tolerances. For now, we'll take their word for it, but it's something we'll be watching closely." Full Article -> https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews...y-maintenance/

How can two quarts within 10k meet dealer normal consumption??
Id be pissed.. wheres it going?? Wheres it burning?? Just kinda writing that off?? And.... how does this translate to long term ownership.. are all the parts getting the oil they need despite "normal" consumption??? Horrid!

Not exactly a great steering benchmark for the G20 to be held to... But it is telling: if it is even worse than the E39 M5's, then damn it must be totally devoid of any feedback whatsoever.

I would not take 2 quarts of oil in 10,000 miles with a grain of salt either. Regarding BMW steering feel, this being my first BMW, I guess ignorance is bliss. My F80 CS feels very good. A

Also test car for C/D is probably driven really hard. Bouncing any car of the rev limiter all the time will produce some oil consumption in turbo engine. |

that said I once had a 2010 Audi that needed a quart of oil every 2000 or so miles.... and eventually got down to every 700 or so. Audi said it was normal. it was definitely not. |

And the E39 530 and 540 had a rack and pinion setup. The irony!

Prob compared it to the e39 M5 b/c of the size of the G20? Doesn't really compare well with the e46 and e90 anymore.
Regardless, ditto on the steering. In 10k miles i went from it's decent -> it's adequate -> it's okay -> meh. Things could be worse- Is anyone on here old enough to remember when BMW majorly F*cked up the steering on some 2001 E46 models? After MASSIVE backlash they corrected it very quickly. I got stuck with one of these cars and had to trade it in for an '02 model. Wish they still listened to feedback.

As the original owner of a 2001 M5 I was concerned about initial oil use to the point that I bought a case and carried it in my trunk. It tapered off considerably after a few thousand miles and aside from regular oil changes at 3,000 to 5,000 miles I have only added 2 quarts in the last 18 years. I went with wider tires up front and a little camber and steering is wonderful!

Was that the notorious A4 4 cylinder oil consumption debacle? I remember, had to put a quart in every 800 miles! I lobbied hard to Audi NA and did qualify for the piston ring replacement and it was fine after that. Sold the car pretty quickly after that though.

Sad to see that back in the day BMW would actually listen to that feedback and quickly make changes. Meanwhile today, its officially been an entire decade of electric steering in BMW's, and they've been ignoring the very loud criticism since day 1.

There is nothing normal about the B58 oil consumption reported by C/D. It's a problem which BMW ought to invest time and money to investigate.

I’m over 15,000 miles and haven’t needed to add a drop. I’ve had my first oil change of course.
