Brand New M340i B58 - didn’t break the engine in :(

So I just drove out the garage in a brand spanking new M340i XDrive today with only 3 miles on the engine. But I totally forgot about breaking the engine in!! I drove in sports plus all the way home and revved the engine quite high many times in my 40 mins drive back. I smelt some burning sort of odour by the time I got back.

Do you think I may have damaged something? I’ve bought this car for a long term ownership, so it’s not on a lease, I’m hoping that I haven’t done any long lasting damage to the engine.

Opinions?

Don't worry about it. Go easy on it from now on untill around 1200 miles. Your car will be fine.

If I were you I'd play it safe and let me use the car for a month or two to make sure it's still okay.

It's fine. A brand new car will have a new car smell for the first few hundred miles IME.

Don't feel bad I did it too. I had it in sport plus by accident with radio blasting driving hard and didn't realize it till I got home and turned the radio off. I am sure I hit the 4k RPM a few times but don't think I broke the car. I may have noticed it if the Tac was easier to read and if the radio was not so loud. I was worried about it but then the worry wore off after a few days. I have driven easy the rest of the break-in period.

Thanks guys! I really hit the pedal hard to see what it could do, which is why I was worried but thanks to putting my mind at ease 😊

I am going to take it easy from now on until I break it in.

For what it’s worth, I'm being a total coward with mine. Never going beyond 4000 rpm, and I still find a bit of a burning smell after my drives. I've only done about 300km on the ICE.

I doubt you've done any damage.

Just reiterating what others have already stated. You're simply smelling all the various plastics/chemicals/etc. burning off. Totally expected with a new car. Enjoy!

No worries, OP. There is a good chance the "burning" smell was the heating of the temporary vapor corrosion inhibitor applied to the undercarriage and engine bay before transport. Think of this as a thin, spray-on coating meant to minimize corrosion during shipping. It has a burning smell when it gets hot, and some of it will be in your engine compartment and/or touching exhaust components. Perfectly normal.

Now, quit racing the engine in Sport+ !

After 10000 km I still get the 'burning' smell sometimes. Your car/engine will be fine, it's consistent hard driving without sufficiently warming engine that causes long term damage.

I highly doubt you did any damage. I did break mine in but that is because I knew I was keeping my car for my collection long term....like forever

Engines are already brake in factory, just don't run cold and will be all ok.

More safe is to made around 200km slow because of brakes and tires and other components which need to make some km to come "together".
