Brakes feel grabby towards the end.

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I've been enjoying my G26 for a couple of months now and have approximately 4k miles on it. I drive in comfort mode about 75% of the time and this observation is based on that. The car is an M440 so it has the M-Sport brakes and mild hybrid tech.
I have noticed that initial pedal feel is good and braking is generally linear until the end (when the car is maybe under 10mph), when without me increasing brake pedal pressure, the brakes seem to grab more and brake harder. Is it related to regen via braking with the mild hybrid?

I have a M340i with over 8k on it and it does the same thing still. I think it's just the nature of the breaks. I'm not a huge fan of it, but it's a lease so I'm definitely not getting after market breaks put on.

Same behavior on both M340i and M440i GC that I've had. It's just the way the brakes are.

The hybrid Regen braking is definitely hurting the braking smoothness. I think the effect is less in Sport mode but I am not 100% sure. I find if slow earlier and coast to gentle stop the regen braking seems less intense.

Agreed, in Comfort and Eco mode they get grabby as soon as the engine cuts outs as much less braking force is needed to stop.

In sport or when the engine doesn't cut below 10mph the breaking is much smoother.

OP- are you talking about the grabbiness of the brake discs, or the lurching due to engine cut off for auto start stop / mild hybrid? If the latter I turned mine off with BimmerCode and that solved that part. The grabbiness of the brakes at the very end of the stop is still there for me though.

If it's a mild hybrid it's the regen motor .

Good news is you'll not have to change your brake pads as often

I've been noticing this too, as I roll off the brake the car almost increases brake pressure until I'm almost off the pedal then it releases, not great feeling

I have a G20 and experience difficulty coming to a smooth stop, as it feels like as the car downshifts while I'm braking, it grabs as the engine slows me down, making it feel like I'm hitting the brakes harder. I know that's probably not what's causing your issue though.

Not a scientific evolution but......brakes on my 2020 M340i were great and the 2022 M440i with mild hybrid has this very annoying issue...I especially dislike the "chirp" that I get when driving off after the car sits...

Happens in my 330i and X3 without M brakes too. I think it's just how BMW brakes are. Our Mercs and Audis don't have that issue and thus, those feel smoother when coming to a stop.

I don't have a lurching problem with the mild hybrid. I actually like it when I am driving in comfort mode. If I don't want it, I switch to sport mode.

I've had that issue on my 330i since day one.

Mine does it, too. I've attributed it to the lack of idle speed torque pushing the car when it shuts off at 10mph coasting down. I've taken it as a challenge to be smooth despite it. I think I've just about got it after 7000 miles.

Experience the same even when in sport individual with everything set to comfort (which turns off auto start-stop with the 48V mild hybrid equipped cars)

It's the (mild) hybrid tech. These do regenerative braking. When you press the brakes, it regens, until a certain minimum speed (5-10kmph) after which it switches to the regular brakes, and they become grabby.

I thought I was losing it until I read this post. I may have already lost it years ago, but at least I'm not the only one. This is definitely a weird behavior. I try and lift my foot to compensate but even doing that I think sometimes my passengers are like WTF are you doing!?!

I found that (I believe others mentioned here already but in case they haven't) setting sport individual everything in comfort so turns off or minimizes recuperation helps a little bit, I still observe a similar behaviour but not as pronounced.

Edited to Add: Oh and sport individual as you know turns off auto start/stop too so that might be the reason why it helps.

I hate being a passenger in our 330i for this reason. But then, I go and drive it and have to have the most delicate touch with the brakes to be smooth. Helps if auto-stop-start is disabled as well.

Yup, my 430 makes it look like I'm in driver's ed class when I'm trying to inch up.
