Windshield Washer Spray Defective?

Did BMW change how the windshield washer spray nozzles work on the G20? I noticed on my M340 that when I activate the washer it seems to release the liquid close to the wiper blade and then it gets wiped across the windshield as opposed to spraying on the windshield. Not sure if this is the new normal or if this indicates a clogged / defective nozzle.

Yes on the g20 the windshield fluid now comes out of the wipers themselves

Yes, they changed it. Why would you presume this isn't working correctly? Instead of sprayers up or right under the bonnet they now are integrated in the wiper arms.

They should have shown you that during delivery

Why should they? There's lot of things changed. This isn't even something that I find that important since you only would need to know when having maintenance. And then u always have the owners manual..

Because it's different than all other cars I've driven or owned, including my 2013 328 and my 2016 340. I believe traditionally most cars spray fluid across the windshield so when I saw fluid collecting at the base of the blade before it even wiped across the windshield I thought something might be wrong. I mean, it still doesn't spray from the blades... it just sorts of collects there and then gets wiped across.

Even though it's minor I agree. I'm sure I'm not the only person to be a bit confused by this. They went over most changes that are incorporated into the G20. Maybe this one was overlooked.

Are you sure it doesn't spray from the arm itself? I cannot remember from my testdrive.

Yeah, it seems to drizzle out and collect on the blade then gets wiped across. Seems a bit weird that's why I wonder if the sprayer(s) are clogged or defective.

Then there is something wrong with yours. Check for clogs first.

I'm standing next to a 330i right now, the nozzles are actually part of the arms and aren't under the bonnet anymore.

I noticed this today on my car... and I can’t remember if the fluid was being sprayed previously. Can anyone confirm if this is normal behavior or not?

I wonder if that also prevents spray from hitting all the surrounding cars when using the windshield wiper fluid. I hate being behind another car that uses it and it gets sprayed all over YOUR car.

You're not alone. I noticed this recently too. I thought the nozzle was blocked since it doesn't seem to spray continuosly (but intermittently, if you get what I mean). Since quite a few of us noticed it, I assume it's normal?

That is mainly because those people haven't angled the spray nozzle properly. I've seen cars where the fluid squirts straight up into the air (and hardly any onto their windshield) and they have no idea why it's happening. Not many know that it can be adjusted easily.

It's normal. It squirts a little pool at the bottom of the windshield then the wiper does the rest to spread it.

I am still not used to this new way. Not sure what the reasoning was behind the change.

I think the change is great, it saves a lot of washer fluid when driving on salted roads.
It's more effective as well, the window gets a lot cleaner. That's my experience at least. The only bad thing is that I can't use them to get a car to back off if it's too close for comfort

I agree. It is new and I can't seem to get used to it either.

Yup. Saves a lot of fluid. It also seems to be doing a good job. Only problem is, in my head, when I don't see a continuous squirt, it seems as though the nozzle is clogged and hence it isn't working effectively.

I had the same question. I saw the nozzles were integrated into the wiper arm itself but the release of the washer fluid was too weak to remove any grime from the windshield itself.

I felt the nozzle was blocked. I'll try to poke it with a pin to see if anything is clogging it.

But you are right, the spray is very weak

Thanks for the heads up, I haven't tried the wiper at all, so this will be tested next.

The new spray works so much more efficiently, and you wont get flipped off by the cars next to or behind you for bathing them with your washer spray. I hate that!

Window sticker says the nozzles are heated as well. I prefer the new design, loading up the wiper blade rather spraying the windshield. Spray is a bit too aggressive, so you end up getting washer fluid on the whole car and the guy next to you.
