For one, slightly misaligned doors don't mess up the line. For two, it seemed to me more elegant to have the line maintained with the doors open. I imagine this was the more expensive way to produce cars, as everyone has shifted away from it and toward trim integrated into the doors. Finally, I hate how the kink looks like a stand-alone afterthought. If you're going to meld the trim with the door, continue it all the way...don't add a piece to it. I bring this up because I remember seeing this car back in a focus group study back in 2015 and there was no kink. I imagine this was raised by at least some consumers, believe me I did, and it almost looks like BMW said okay give 'em back the kink!
The 3 series was the only car that had trim like that. All the higher trim cars always had the trim just on the door and no separate gutter on the body. I think it looks ugly and bulky on all 3 series and much more elegant in cars like the X5 and 5 series. Unless I'm mistaken, all current and past 5 and 7 series were built like the G20 with the trim only on the window/door.

I'm not sure why only the 3 series was made like that, but it ruined the clean glossy trim of the M Sport models since it ran next to a dull and fading rubber trim on the window.

I haven't really seen a successful joined kidney grille in the new BMWs yet. The shape between the grilles is too flat of a surface or something, I'm not quite sure how to explain it. But the bit of material joining the grilles together just isn't integrated elegantly IMO. Maybe they'll figure it out better in future iterations.
Love it or hate it, the new large conjoined grille will make the older separate kidney grilles look outdated. I was shopping for an E39 M5 and I couldn't get over how old-fashioned the grille looked. That's not necessarily a bad thing as I think the car is beautiful. It's just interesting how new design elements so quickly make older ones look dated.

Guys if you look closely they photoshopped out the side vent, and they also photoshopped out the camera in the front grille. I believe they are keeping a few things under wraps for the reveal.

The did not photoshop the "vent". It's just a line in the bodywork.

Bmw colors seem not to translate well from their marketing images to real life I'm hoping it's not misano blue

Also - could we get a mesh wheel option for the m340i at the very least. I'm starting to be over 5 spokes

Could be but that looks much stronger & deeper on the X2. Personally I think we'll see a few all new colours on the G20... hoping the blue one in the manufacturing video is of them!

Monaco blue or Monte Carlo blue would be so nice.

I guess I was referring to the 3/4, and really just the coupes...since that's all I buy. My biggest issue is that I don't want the trim to be part of the door on the coupes. I didn't like it when the coupe went from one, clean piece of trim to two pieces starting with the F32 I believe, but I understand cost-wise why this was done.

I'm hoping its a new one too.... though I like the color in the picture it looks like it could just be phytonic blue or whatever the X3/X4/X5 are getting which is nice, but I'd want a color that is a bit exclusive (though I doubt all that many x3-x5 buyers get that color as it is)

Although they should have kept the traditional hoftmeister kink, it seems that it’s going to be a great looking car.

It’s what the F30 should have been from the beginning with the correct hood line placement. It seems that all this G-Series generation are F-series with the hood line placed correctly.

Very clever placement for the leds indicating that autonomous systems are on on the wheel, without having to put a big round led on all the circumference!

I hope it's not Misano Blue either, but it's one of the choices on the new Z4 configurator. I usually love BMW blues and bright blues in general, but after seeing it in person on a bunch of X2s it hasn't grown on me at all.

That Z4 configurator is what has me thinking....

Driver Intervention required is an operational status.

in that video i think there are IR camera arrays placed above the digital cluster that directly face the driver. maybe this is similar to what Cadillac is doing with their supercruise? a driver monitor system perhaps. man it would be amazing if BMW releases a system on par with the supercruise that does hands free highway driving. that'll put them on par if not superior to tesla's autopilot. (unless firmware V9's mad max auto lane change is absolutely perfect)

BMW Extended Traffic Jam Assistant has a Driver Monitoring Camera with IR in the instrument cluster, 3D Pulse LIDAR, and Car-to-Car Info Sharing (which gives it a slight edge over SuperCruise).

Tesla Autopilot is an extremely poor reference as their minimum hardware system is the same MobileEye platform found in KAFAS Gen2 BMW's.

lol i wouldn't call autopilot an "extremely poor" reference to compare any systems against, they've ditched mobileEye for a while now and all new cars are on their custom platform. honestly by all account it's the defacto benchmark when comparing other semi autonomous systems against. if you think otherwise then i don't know what rock you've been living under

truth is autopilot when used attentively, is much better at highway driving than any other systems i've experienced, certainly better than the ones on the new 5 series, which has a nasty habit of bouncing between the lane markers.
