G20 open pore wood more fragile than glossy wood?

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Does anyone have long-term user experience with open pore wood in other models?

My G20 black oak wood looks cool, but I wonder if water/moisture getting onto the wood grain will destroy it.

My previous bimmers have glossy wood that were left unattended forever, and a simple wipe-down with water vinylex restores full gloss.

The detailing forum had a similar thread with zero traffic, so I am trying my luck on the main forum.

I had open pore grey oak in my previous A5. Was very easy to clean. Would just wipe it down with a swifter duster when I did the interior every few weeks. I wouldn’t use water, and I think you’ll be fine.

Good tips, I will then use microfiber towel to clean then. It is good that door handles(highest traffic area) have no wood(cost cutting?).

Hi,

I've had my car for almost 2 years; it has open pore wood trim and still looks great! All I do is wipe off dust occasionally

Hope that helps!

Now that you mention it, I did have the wood trim on my door handles and I'm sure it get wet on a few occasions when getting out of the car when it was raining. I never had an issue though. Trim looked like new the day I sold the car.

Thanks for sharing. I just realize painted open pore also means there is no color matching issue when the wood ages(and one trim needs replacement).

I would think the open pore, being matte finish, would hide scratches better than gloss.

This is a good point. My wife has the “fineline” gloss wood trim in her X1, and there are noticeable micro scratches on it even though she takes pretty good care or her car. I definitely did not have that issue on my A5 with the open pore wood.

I have it in my car. Very durable and attractive. I can't see it wearing out any faster than any other trim.

Yeah my previous 2 bimmers needed occasional 3M hand glaze to buff out micro scratches on glossy red wood(similar process as clear coat).

The issue with those(red wood) was that it was impossible to match color without changing the whole set(been there done that, luckily under warranty)

The amount of time an average BMW lasts probably will not push up against the lifetime of open pore wood. It still uses a protective coating, it's just not as thick and is not shiny. It's a similar finish as used on some musical instruments and those are handled very often so durability is not an issue.

I stay away from shiny surfaces as much as possible due to the scratches that will eventually form. Glad I went with a non-glossy CF trim (M Performance). For me it was the best option for aesthetics and durability.

I do like the G20 matte CF trims, and that may be the one mod I will do on my car.

Musical instruments usually do not experience the harsh temperatures as in the passenger cabin.

I haven't seen matte open pore wood in cars with 200k+ miles, but my previous E39(with 2nd owner) did past 200k miles. That set of vavona wood trim's glossy surfaces are still OK, but the pieces are now 2 tones.
