Piggyback Tune Recommendations

I just got a 23 m340i and I'm just planning for the future but what are some of the best piggyback tunes on the market. I don't know if I want to go the ECU unlock route until after warranty and kinda just want to tune it to get some more juice

I think for piggybacks the consensus will be to go with the JB4. That said please keep in mind piggybacks are detectable by the dealer even after being removed. I only mention this because of your comment re warranty and ecu unlock flash etc. Gone are the days that a removed piggyback leaves no trace evidence - it used to be a big selling point for them but you'll notice it's not discussed by the piggyback manufactures (or resellers) any more

True a flash will likely be pro-actively detected by the dealer and your car may be "flagged" (my Mission Performance flash does not get picked up - but that's another story - that has to do with a few variables) but that doesn't matter - it just means that if the poop hits the fan the dealer will know your car was flashed. But at the same time if the poop hits the fan on your piggybacked car the dealer will deep dive and the piggyback presence will be found out. Some claim piggybacks are getting pro-actively flagged as well (even if removed) but I'm not sure if that's true or not and in that I am flashed I have no way of knowing. Regardless the story ends the same way

So that's the bad news - the good news is that a well designed piggyback or flash has proven to be very safe for the B58 motor

Congrats on the new car! Looking forward to updates

ps- if it were me I would piggyback and then wait for a state side unlock - while the flash tunes deliver an experience well beyond what a trick box can - the thought of having to send my DME back overseas when it gets relocked by the dealer would be a real bummer - just my 2-cents

I'd have to agree with the above. It has the most flexibility as far as "stages" and how far you can go with it. Another huge selling point for me was the app and logging ability. You may still have issues with warranty but don't quote me on that.

for $150 you can get a BMS intake and Dinantronics piggyback . I was very pleased with sound and slight noticeable difference in pull when flooring it. Did have downpipe installed as well.

I have the Carbahn (Steve Dinan’s new company) piggyback and loved it. Conservative power games, but especially noticeable with 100 octane (which it uses a specific map for). I used to worry about warranty and purchased that too (factory matching warranty). I’ll be parting ways with it soon and will let it go for a great price if interested.

I became impatient and decided on a flash tune via the FEMTO unlock route. I'll be running the MHD tune (either 93 octane or E30 map) once I get back the unlocked ECU.

What was your process for going the FEMTO route? Cost? And what year is your car? I have a brand new 2023 and I don't exactly know if I want to void the warranty so fast but I also know the FEMTO can be pricey, but its worth it in the end

I took it to a local shop (SpeedLogic) that offers the unlock service. Process is super simple - dropped the car off at the shop, they removed the ECU, shipped it out via DHL express, and once they receive it back, will flash the MHD tune and reinstall. Total cost is around $2,400 with labor, including new NGK spark plugs.

My car is a 2021. I had the same dilemma and went for it. The car served me well (knock on wood) with no problems to date and I'm anal with the maintenance, so I'm okay with no more dealer visits and/or over the air software updates.

That's what most customers are doing.

Customers with upgraded turbo or 100% E85 use the ECU unlock option.
The rest are using a piggyback, waiting for an OBD flash.

I'm currently considering unlocking by FEMTO, but because of a turbo upgrade in my Z4. So far I have used a piggybox with which I was satisfied but now I would like to have more power (+150-200hp)
To be honest, because of a Stage 1 tune I would never do it.
1 : it is significantly more expensive than a box because of the unlock price and the difference is not so big (maybe 20hp)
2: there is a risk that it will be overwritten with an OTA update. And then you can pay 1000usd for FEMTO every time.

What piggyback do most people go with and seem most satisfied with?
