I think the difference with the B5? (not a die hard Audi guy) RS4 wagon is that it was way more of a sleeper. These new wagons are in your face, no doubt performance machines with gaping grilles, 21” wheels, CCBs, badges galore and mid 6 figure price tags.

For my money, I’d either go X5M Comp if I’m spending 6 figures, or something like the M135i or M240i hatch if they made it for the US. Even an M2 hatch at $70K would be a real interesting vehicle.

I don’t really care about what others think of my cars, but when half of my buddies would make fun of my $150K wagon, that takes away a little bit of the fun.
Don't forget the Dodge Magnum SRT-8.

I owned a E91 before our current G80 and I can tell you it was a work horse and we loved it. Also, helped getting KW coil overs! Lol. We it bought when our first kid was about to be born and the wagon came in so handy. In fact, my parents had bought Chevy Malibu Classic in 1980 and we went everywhere with it and carried so many people with in. I literally grew up with wagons. I would 100% buy this. Utility with power. For a lot of people including me, M cars aren’t garage queens, they’re daily drivers. This would be perfect. Sorry, can’t stand SUVs. Have zero need for them.

This could potentially bring me back to the brand as a whole.

I have had five SUVs. I have had three wagons, two of them BMWs. I have had sedan and coupe counterparts of the wagons. When it comes to utility, wagons compare favorably to small SUVs. When it comes to the driver experience, the wagons win out over the SUVs every time. In fact, 99% of the driving experience between the sedans and wagons is exactly the same. All in my humble opinion, of course, but I vote with my wallet.

!00% I will buy a G61 540 if BMW sends it. If they only send the G99, then 100% I will reluctantly buy one of those, though I would prefer a 540i touring. I don't "need" 600+ hp.

In all honesty, I love the concept and think they're cool as shit but I would never buy one. It's meant to be sporty and practical but it's worse at both than it's counterparts, the sedan and the SUV. In other words, if a sport sedan is not practical enough for you, you might as well just get a performance SUV. And people do, and I doubt that this time it will be any different.

TL;DR

It's cool because it's different, and everyone wants one until there's actually one for sale - then no one buys one.

This is, of course, my opinion and I'm subject to being wrong more often than not...just ask my wife.
You’re not completely off base and I’m sure someone is going to say “well in this area, you see them” but really, it doesn’t sell. The RS6 for the most part is soft seller same with the E63. I don’t see the M5 Touring fairing that much better even though it fits more within the BMW line up than it does Audi and Mercedes.

I’m curious to know what BMW’s product planning was for this because for the longest time, the reason for never receiving this “unique” cars was low-volume, high cost, not worth certification, yada, yada, yada. I just can’t see this doing any better than a CSL or any limited-production BMW at this price point especially in a body style that isn’t too favourable this side of the pond.

I definitely applaud the people that get them, same for the manuals. I like the idea that they exist, I just don't have a use case for either.

Rear wheel steer should help with the weight. The AMG GT 4 door has better track times than the M5 CS and this is a big factor.

I believe we will get regular 5 series wagon. Homologation process is way too costly for them to justify paying for that and only sell a few hundred cars.

Having just today seen my first E63 estate for about three years, I tend to agree. RS6s are still reasonably popular here in the UK, for those who like to swagger with their bulging fenders. But the market for exotically overpowered barges is surely niche. I see more X5 and X6 Ms around for sure. And this new M5 in touring form is only realistically going to be appealing to a 'for its own sake' customer base--especially here, where it's scandalous to be driving anything other than a sanitised 4 pot hybrid.

2023: M5 touring coming to the US market.

2024: Are you buying one. Well it’s too expensive, it’s too heavy, the drivetrain is odd, I don’t like the colors, the steering is horrible, waiting for the CS, I will keep my 1999 E39 wagon because it’s the best M car ever made, fill the excuse here….

2026: BMW discontinues M5 touring due to poor sales

2032: BMW needs to bring the touring to the US. I would be buy one if they did

Just the fact we can only have the M5 as a touring is pretty much a sign that Bmw want it to fail. A M340i Touring would have sold much better but i guess they are just looking at the crazy high profit margin products for us.

You described me. I would drive a coupé or a sedan, but I need the trunk for my mountain bike, forestry equipment, long cottage and hiking trips. I’ve even used the trunk to sleep in at times.. And I dislike the way SUV:s handle and look in comparison.

The M3/B3/M5/B5 touring would be my ultimate dream cars. Ultimate Autobahn/roadtrip cruisers
