Mild Hybrid for an old school guy?

Hey everyone,
Could you please advise me with some honest facts the mild hybrid will not be a particular area of concern owning these cars for 10+ years / 150k+ miles. Im in market for new or used x3m40/340i and cannot make up my mind. My old school mentality always leans towards simplicity. The b58 is such a great engine and im certain with good maintenance and care will easily last 150k+ . I want a great car/engine to last me through the transition into evs and some time past - something I can fix myself. These cars are so solid but those hybrid components worry me. Any experience/thoughts from personal mechanics or old school guys like me?

It's all relative isn't it.

I remember years back, my workshop foreman having issues with an ECU on a Jaguar. He was pleased he was coming up to retirement and felt for us young guys, having "all these electronics" to cope with in the future. That was in 1977.

No need for concern in my opinion, just do your regular maintenance and you should be fine.

As an aside, unless you are going to spend thousands of dollars in special equipment there isn't a car available that you are going to be able to fix all issues yourself. You should be able to do maintenance items and some simple repairs but for many issues you will need specialized equipment/computers.

I am shopping solely for a 2020 M340i, because I do not want the mild hybrid.

Agreed. The Mild Hybrid battery seems to complicate many service procedures. But, also, these cars are basically computers these days.

100% agreed, all relative, and if I could I would get an even simpler engine - unfortuantely most of those cars are $$$, have 400k miles, or totalled. So at this point doing what I can to either understand the tech better or eliminate it

Im definitely there. Unfortunately less chance of customizing options but cant win it all. m240 has no hybrid. sacrifice seats but seems that its the only new b58 beside supra that has no 48v intervention

Weird question, is it possible to "delete" the 48V mild hybrid system somehow, I understand there is a lot of coding involved?

The M240 may be the way to go, especially coming from a 135. Then buy some sort of beater for when you need four doors or a hatch.

I will point out that, while the mild hybrid may add complexity to the the engines, it also substantially boosts gas mileage. My 2022 M440 Drive Gran Coupe gets far better gas mileage than my 2017 M240i convertible did.

It also boosts power a bit, too.

I see that. For me the mpg is already so great. Its not a focus and have no prob sacrificing some mpgs in a performance oriented car. Thank you for feedback guys.

We drove a 2010 Prius for 6 years, Put 100k miles on it and did the following maintenance:
Front brakes at 97k
Wipers when needed
Oil change when needed
I had ordered shocks/struts for replacement before we decided to trade her in so they were due.

Nothing was ever needed in the drivetrain, it was a solid, reliable car.

I know the mild system is different but I don't know if anyone has 100k+ on a BMW system yet. Just saying it's probably not a big deal.

All the system is doing is using the starter to help with the load on the engine.
If there is a problem, replace the component or in this case, replace the starter.

Does putting the car in Sport mode disable start/stop in the mild hybrid? I’m thinking it does, because, as I mentioned, that’s the first thing I do and I don’t ever remember having ASS engage.

The downside would be that IF you wanted to drive in Comfort there would be no way to disable ASS in the mild hybrid as there is in a 2020.
