I also owned (although in the F series, so previous generation BMW 3 series) both a 4 cylinder and a 6 cylinder pertol engined cars, and for me there were really 2 major differences (because power was enough for civilized driving in both):
- engine sound - suspension I am really a car fanatic, so the engine sound was very important for me. But if this is not so important for you, then 1 less reason to go for a 2 year older car. Regarding suspension, there was a major difference in the previous generation 3 series between the 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder cars, Now in the G series cars (which you are considering with a 2020 or 2022 cars) the suspension is already much-much stiffer. Me having a 330e (which is actually a 320i with an extra electric engine) with 19" wheels with RFT tyres on adaptive suspension was actually less comfortable than my 13years old Porsche 911 on 18" wheels... It is that harsh.... (But changing to 18" and non-RFT was making a big difference!) So I assume your 330i will also have a very firm, driver's-car suspension. So my balanced suggestion would be: if engine sound and engine power is not that important for you, then the 330i will be also powerful enough to drive you and your family comfortable around, and both cars have an engaging suspension to enjoy that drive. If you are a car enthusiast, then there is no question: the 340i will make you smile every time you start it and every time you drive it. Of course these suggestions are only valid if you cannot test drive. Because with such a financial commitment, normally you should test both, and then decide for yourself!!! |

Depends on your driving. 330i has plenty of power, gets better milage, and likely handles as well as the 340 b/c of the adaptive suspension.
My hearing is bad, so stereo makes little difference to me. Check insurance rates on both cars. Also 50K miles is a lot. I usually only go 100K on my 3 series. After that the big bucks repairs kick in. |

M340i IF the mileage was much closer to the 330i. But in this case, I'd swing for the 330i. Considerably lower mileage, more time in warranty for you, great gas mileage potential, quick enough for most, and the Adaptive Suspension goes a long way vs the M-Sport passive suspension (it's the one option I REALLY wish I had although non-RFT have helped round out the sharper impacts quite a bit). It's the more pragmatic choice. But if you find an M340i with much lower mileage for not that much more, to hell with pragmatism and just go for the M340i - B58 really just hits different

Generally you will have more people picking m340i over 330i if given the choice. The price and mileage alone for this particular m340i is a great deal IMO. I would pick it over a brand new 330i unless my main concern is gas mileage. But I would consider something else if that was the case. My vote is for m340i

I recently upgraded from F30 328i to G20 330i with Adaptive Suspension.
It has more than sufficient power for Australian roads can handle. It has great tech and handling on top of it. But I have been thinking about M340i and F80 M3. It will be the same case when I own the M340i, I would be wondering about the M3 and vice versa It never ends.

For me M340i just for the effortless power.
330i would be nice if it was 500lb lighter and had a 5 speed MT so you can up-shift at the redline, than we talking. |
