430i vs M440i

Hi all

I'm considering which 4 series to go for.
Although I don't really need the speed and power, I wonder if the 6 cylinder engine in the M440i will be smoother and more refined than the 4 cylinder in the 430i?

I've had a string of really fast cars and I find these days I just want a refined relaxed drive but realise sometimes a bigger engine can give you that as you're typically driving at lower revs than with a smaller one?
Grateful for your thoughts!

The M440i will be a great choice , I own a convertible and you can customize your ride from completely quite ride in eco mode while in traffic to pleasant ride in comfort mode for daily use. And when you want a bit of exitement Sport or sport plus is the best option.

M440i GC owner here. This car is just as at home cruising on a highway as it is tearing up a backroad. These things are extremely relaxed in comfort mode. It really is a jack-of-all-trades car.

430i owner here, the car is extremely fast and the engine extremely smooth and refined. In both cars it’s really all about the transmission which is spectacular.

Suggest you take a long test drive in the 430, I think you’ll find it more than engaging for your needs as you’ve defined them. You don’t need the more powerful engine.

Echoing what has been said above about the M440i, it's very fast when needed but calms down brilliantly. With comfort settings it's quiet, smooth and, well, comfortable. Transformative, as though it's a different car. And that engine is probably the smoothest of any I've owned. Obviously, I highly recommend the M440i. At least give it a test drive.

Thanks so much for the replies. Greatly appreciated!
It's funny. I'm in an Audi E-Tron GT at the moment which in many ways is a dream car.
But I so miss my old BMW (I had an 840d for a while) and there's something about the way Audi do things I just don't like!
Can't wait to be back in the Beemer fold.

If you end up choosing the 430, be sure you include the Dynamic Handling Package and the M Sport Package. Those are standard on the M440 but optional on the 430, and IMO are key to the driving feel, separate from engine output.

I love my M440i GC Xdrive. B58 is a very smooth even engine because it is naturally balanced. You just can't beat the inline 6 for smoothness. Active dampers is also nice, adaptive suspension is the way to go.

Pretty much no penalty in efficiency also.

The b58 in the m440i gran coupe is neutered.
It’s doesn’t pull as hard as the m340 or x3m40i.
And the suspension is soft compared to the m340i and my x3m40i.
I felt like an Audi to me. Not BMW like.
I’ve had 430i coupe msport loaners and the engine lags and is boring and lame. Not even as responsive as my n20 F30. Don’t get a 430i engine if you like a fun drive.

As someone who has owned an M340i and currently owns an M440i GC, the B58 feels the same in both. The difference is that the M440i GC is a bit heavier with more sound deadening, and the final drive ratio is a bit shorter on the M440i GC (2.93) compared to the M340i (2.81). This actually gives the M440i GC a bit more punch from a dig, but it isn't as fast to 60 MPH due to it being heavier. And the M440i GC does have a slightly softer suspension which makes it more comfortable on highway trips, but if you have the adaptive suspension, switch it to sport and it is plenty firm and lots of fun on backroads.

I don’t know about the GC but managed a 3.8 sec 0-60 (dragy timed) on my then stock G22 M440ix and definitely pulls. And after intake and turbo inlet install sounds pretty good even with stock exhaust setup have managed a pop here and there on downshifts still nothing compared to 2020 m340 and also way too quiet for my liking but nice to hear once in a while. I will be installing a catted DP soon first to see the sound before installing some kind of exhaust. As far as suspension it may be a bit softer but probably need adaptive for better feel. It still handles way better than my F32 435i did and the coupe has so much more overall bracing than the sedan plus the lower center of gravity makes for an enjoyable ride overall.

I have a 24 M440i xDrive GC. I have driven a 24 M440i xDrive coupe and they feel similar with a slight edge to the 2 door for nimbleness but the same for acceleration.

I drove a 430 and it felt down on power compared to the M440s especially around town. This may seem obvious, and it is, but it was very noticeable.

I wanted a daily driven GT that could haul 4 people on occasion and 2 people on long road trips with plenty of power when needed so the 4 door 6 cylinder made the most sense for me.
