B57D30T2 - Engine Swap / Replacement for M340D Touring G21 - Possible ?
BMW confirms for my Vin#, the engine for the 2021 BMW M340D Touring (G21) MHEV is the : B57D30B – Part Nbr: 11005A3CD08
NB: Am mulling on getting a spare New Old Stock engine from Germany to do the swap down the road.. The one list ed has 0Km and is excess inventory from BMW. Will the following engine fit & install in the UK RHD model without a fuss ? Any emissions issues to factor in ? or the MHEV ? "SKU: B57D30T2 Diesel-engine BMW (new) 250 kW 6 Cylinder, AWD; with Injectors, turbo charger No.: 895024-2 + 900892-1; 905897 + 905881-1; high-pressure pump No.: 0445010864; flywheel, EGR, Oil separator. Matchcode: B57D30B Weight: 185.50 Kg Vehicle use: BMW G20/G21 M340d xDrive (ab 04/2020); G22 M440d xDrive (ab 03/2021); G05/G06 X5/X6 40d xDrive (av 04/2020); G01/G02 X3,X4 M40d (ab 08/2020); G16 840d xDrive (ab 03/2022); G30/G31 540d xDrive (ab Q2/2020)" The sticker has USA on it...with the Date of Manufacture on it. Sorry, don’t mean to offend but to me this comes across as totally bonkers!
It’s like buying a new laptop and then getting a spare motherboard just in case the original goes wrong. Firstly, there’s loads of other things that might go wrong too (same as with a car), and secondly by the time you’re ready to do open heart surgery on the car there will almost certainly be a newer, nicer option. Who knows, you might have even got over your anti-EV feelings by then. |

Further to what Paul has said above and not wanting to sound pessimistic but the anticipated longevity of the engine could be significantly greater than the rest of the car for any manner of reasons. Looked after and BMW engines are more than capable of doing starship mileage but the body they're in maybe not so much?
It does on the face of it seem like a rather expensive outlay for something that may possibly never come to fruition? |

Mmmm... I follow.
I must admit...was getting a tad OTT going down the rabbit hole and finding a 'steal deal' M340D engine simply because it was new old stock, and relatively 'cheap' at Euro4700 Excl TVA, versus a new BMW UK engine quoted at GBP17K !) ..simply to have the 'phew !' factor & 'got myself a spare 340bhp in the garage' with a smug smile for a Steal Deal of the Century... So thank you for making me see sense...better it came from you guys than a probing question from the irate wife : "whats that engine in the corner of the garage !!?? and how much did you spend that you didnt need to ??" |

You could put a sheet of glass on the top and have it in the lounge as an interesting coffee table. I’m sure the missus would be dead chuffed!
(Only half joking - a friend has the rotor/fan of a jet engine as his coffee table). |
