M340i - New Owner Intro

My first time behind the wheel of a BMW was on a twisty canyon road in a 6mt e46 m3 in the early to mid 2000's, from that moment forward I was hooked! Fast forward a few years to //M performance driving school and my first opportunity to push M cars around the track and I was really hooked. I've now owned 4 m3's including an e93 m3 convertible, an e92 m3, f80 m3, and more recently another e92 m3 that I still own and which sees the track regularly. I'm fortunate to have experienced so many fun cars.

Happy to say that my first time driving the m340i was Monday and then again on Wednesday where I got to test drive the car I ended up purchasing and taking delivery of today. Huge fan for the Gxx platform and glad to have picked up a well optioned example. Looking forward to sharing my experiences with the new car and hearing from others as well.

Glad you went with cognac! It's so under rated in the states!

Congrats on the beauty.

It must be 2021 as it has red calipers, are they standard or an option with specific package?

Very clean. I went for the exact same spec apart from the red calipers I guess both blue and red turned out to be good looking

A 2021, you got it! They let you choose between blue and red calipers now, standalone no cost "option" to change from blue (the default) to red.

Funny I have a slight preference for blue actually but this car had all of the other options I wanted and I agree they both look good so I went for it.

Awesome car and congrats! Spec'ed well and loaded. And the cognac is just the best. I didn't get it because i had to take the car or lose the deal but ill just admire it from afar lol.

Curious... how does your m340i compare to your other m cars? Would love to hear from the owners perspective.

Appreciate it, thanks! So in one of the 340i review videos I watched the owner said that if you were coming from an e9x chassis car that you'd appreciate the dynamics of the new g2x chassis, I completely agree with that. Different cars for sure but there are some similar handling characteristics between the two. Then in terms of the throttle response of the engine, it's very much on point. I've had a few other turbo vehicles where the throttle seemed lethargic down low, whether that's due to turbo lag or tuning, I'm not sure, but the 340i has great throttle response even coming off the line.

In terms of a direct comparison to my e92 m3, that's a bit more difficult bc the m3 is heavily modified for the track at this point. I do love the high revving NA experience with the m3, and especially appreciate it on track where it's regularly near redline. The m3 is always in a raw/aggressive state with all I've done to it. At the same time I'm appreciating the dual nature of the m340i on the street, comfy and quiet when you want, and still lively when pushed. Great daily from that perspective. As I put some more miles on the m340i, will give it some more thought. Thrilled with this combo of vehicles though, I must say.

Black, cognac, and red. Looks hot!!

I'm an E9x M3 guy too and other than raw excitement, our M340i is very similar in driving.

Thank you for the wonderful and a detailed comparo. Seems like its kind of apple to an orange. Different car for different purpose.

Congratulations and enjoy! Being in Texas I guess no brainer between RWD and xDrive? You'll have an easier time of it than me for sure!

How do you like the Cognac? I couldn't get used to the bottom piece being Cognac-colored plastic so went with Black & Blue w/ Alum Mesh. What trim did you go for?

Very close to my spec! You might consider swapping the RFT's at some point for go-flat Michelin PS4S, they are absolutely phenomenal tires!

Awesome Spec. Question about exhaust: It seems like all of the '21 reviews on youtube have substantially less pops and crackles than earlier models. What has been your experience?

So RWD was a fairly straightforward decision you are right, no snow, potential for some occasional fun on track at a later date, and weight savings as well.

Digging the Cognac still and the Cognac-colored lower trim doesn't bother me too much. I have the "Open Pore Fine Wood Oak Grain" as the configurator calls it or "Oak matte finish wood trim" as it's called on the window sticker. Digging the non-glossy surface, no fingerprints!

So my street set for my e92 M3 has PS4S at the moment and I totally concur, huge fan, definitely going non-rft PS4S when the RFT's need a swap! I have tried many a tire in my day btw and the Michelin's are often the best choice.

So my 2021 definitely has an extremely low amount of crackles and pops but I may be the exception in that I prefer it that way. My F80 M3 was a ZCP spec car and had a wealth of crackles and pops. It was great at first but then got old and I think part of that was that it always sounded the same which made it seem artificial over time. Very subjective I know and I will admit I was a fan initially so I understand why folks are seeking it out and expect it to be the same between model years. I personally think they removed it to make way for the new M3/M4 which will surely have it.

I tinted the car today with Formula One Stratos 70 all-around (sides and rear). It's extremely light and is exactly what I was after. As the tint is still drying and I've scheduled ceramic coating next, will post some more photos once that is complete.
